O/T Something Bit My Dog

I went out to feed the 7 month old pups this morning and noticed blood on one's front shouler and around his ear. I brought him in and got him cleaned up and noticed a large inflamation below his ear. I thought he got in a fight with his brother, but he was fine. Plus he's lighter weight than the one hurt. Also beagles almost always go for the ears, not under. Took him to the vet and she said it was definitely two punture bites from something with a lot of bacteria in its mouth. I wonder if a raccon got in the kennel looking for left-over dogfood. They had to do surgery to get his wound cleaned up and he'll have a drain tube for two or three days. Any thoughts?

All up to date on shots. I thought of a 'possom too.

He's staying at the vet's tonight to let the drainage tube make the mess there rather than in the house here. He'll be staying in the house and keeping quiet--or at least trying for a few days. Goes back in two or three days to have the tube out hopefully. It's hard to believe it got that infected overnight. I've always had a "better safe than sorry" attitude with all my dogs when it comes to trips to the vet.

Larry,
I looked up your IP, says you"re near Grand Rapids Mi. It bet it was raccoon or maybe a weasel/mink. Most of the opossums I have seen do not want to fight, but being that your dog is a pup, maybe it was an opossum.

I have seen pine marten up north but nothing down in the lower part of Michigan where we are at. Doubt it was a fisher since they can push 20 lbs and likely would have killed the dog.

I have been dealing with a mink on and off here for a few years. Sooner or later I will win, but at the moment he is getting a full belly on my chickens. But he doesn"t eat them, just rips out their throat. The chicken cage is mink proof right now.

My two cents,
Rick

(quoted from post at 08:51:12 11/27/12) Are you sure its a Mink and not a Weasel as they bite the throat to suck out the blood

Yes, a mink does that too.
Years ago, my mother was losing chickens every night killed the same way. It took me several tries but I finally caught the culprit (a mink).

I skinned the mink and had it tanned, then gave the tanned hide to my mother.
In 4 or 5 nights that mink had torn the throats open on 27 hens.

Can't confirm for sure, I have seen it a couple of times and it looks the same size as a mink I trapped several years ago. I have a big creek nearby that borders my property and that is the way he always heads. I see his tracks in the winter now and then. It is a nice chocolate almost black color.

Be VERY careful touching any animal that's been bit by another.

Rabies is spread by saliva.

And it's one of those diseases that if you start showing symptoms, you're already too far gone to save.
