Big tail on the dog today

Today just to start getting the manure out a little faster we called the local dealer that rents spreaders. They had a 500 bu. Kuhn Knight prospread 150- All I can say is wow, that's a big box spreader comapred to our H&S 235.

Hooked that behind our Oliver 1855 and I plumbed in a pioneer coupler directly to the reservoir for the return on the hydraulic drive apron and went off to the races. It's about 40 minutes round trip to haul up the road compared to 30 with the smaller spreader, but you're getting more than 2x the amount hauled in that time.

Will try to get some pictures tomorrow when I pick back up. Hoping to finish off the manure pile tomorrow, between Dad and myself hauling with 2 tractors.

Maybe next weekend we can both hook onto the plows then and just get it knocked out and done. It really isn't much to do by most standards, just can't get anything done during the week and Dad's busy with the rest of the farm to have much time for hauling manure either.

Oh yeah- $20/hr, $200 minimum on the rental. Can probably have it all hauled out now in maybe 15-16 hours.

Looking up the specs for it they call out for a minimum of 120 HP on it, so at 105 on the PTO our 1855 is on the small side. It still handles it pretty good with the hydraulic brakes and lots of weight up front tho.

We had a neighbor that would pick up a piece of rental equipment just before closing time and tell them that the wanted it for early the next day.

He rented a large air compressor with a jack hammer late one day. Took it home, disconnected the hour meter, used the compressor all night to break up his barn floor. Reconnected the hour meter and had the compressor back to the rental house when they opened the next morning. He told them that he changed his mind - and they didn't charge him anything.

He's the same guy that borrowed our manure spreader and returned it at 11:00 at night. We discovered the next morning that the whole back beater was completely gone.

He never got to borrow any more of our equipment.

(quoted from post at 01:18:39 11/25/12) Dick2,

There's a special area in the hot place for guys like that. Avarice is an ugly characteristic.

very well stated. Hopefully all will outgrow this trait...like I finally did.

Don it's sure diferent from when we hauled out the pile back in the 60's. We used two Deere ground drive spreaders, one was N and I think the other was an L. My sis pulled one with the 630 and I pulled the other one with the 35 A. He loaded with the 51 A and Caswell loader. Dad never let me haul with the 630 cause, me being a boy, I'd put her in 6th gear and fly down the dirt path. The 35 A only did 6 or 7 MPH. The 630 had power steering and eleectric start so my sis could handle it. I found out real fast to put my foot behind the flywheel on that old A to block the flying seed balls when I was driving through a thistle patch. Boy would they hurt when they hit the my face. The neighbor has a custom spreading outfit haul his piles with those big spreaders. I'd love to run one for a day. Jim

You aint kidding Fixerupper. Been many years I hauled it all out with just our 235, going up & down the road. Dad did alot with an IH 200 w/out tail gate too. More than once he left a calling card on the road with that one. We've rented spreaders in the past, but not since before we got the 18. We rented a 400 bu knight a couple times and then we'd have to rent a tractor big enough to pull it.

Now, it seems the 500 bu is the smallest they rent out. It's tricky loading it with our loader tractor, a Massey 165 w/ an Allis Chalmers loader on it. Could use another 2' lift and another foot or so sticking out. Makes it a lot better if I have a bit of a trench to park the spreader in, then that gives me an extra 6-8" to get it over and pile it up some.
