lawn tractor chains...

All,

I've got a Kubota mini=tractor with a front mounted snowblower.

I also have a set of chains for a pickup truck. These chains are not wide enough for the tractor turf tires.

Has anyone been successful adding chain links "crosswise"? The links that are on there now are smooth-twist type.

Pros/cons to this idea?

It could be done, but it would be time consuming and you would probably invent a few new words in the process. I realize that chains are kinda pricey, but if they are available for your tractor I would seriously consider purchasing a new set. Unless you use them a lot they will last for quite some time. I had a set for a Sears Suburban that I used to have and used them for plowing, etc. Never did wear them out.----- Just my thoughts.

If you have any truck stop close to you stop in and ask if they have any throw away tire chains you can buy and tell them what you want to use them for. Many places like that have them or you can also try the local road dept and see if they have any from the road graders. I have 2 sets of tire chains for my tractors and that is how I got them

Take two sets and join them by removing one side chain from each set. Join the cross links with repair links. Then take up any excess cross chain length by connecting two cross chains at the center to make an X. Much better traction with an X chain.

Dennis, I am a great believer in tire chains if you are plowing on ice or frozen soil. On asphalt you can get a lot of spin. Just make sure the cross links are close so you don't have a lot of slip and grab, that stress cracks axles.

Cut your chains down and put them on the front wheels. I have a Kubota B2150 with no clearance for chains on the rear. I have used chains on the front for the last 4 winters to move snow with the FEL and to skid logs in the woods for firewood. That is all you need if you have 4wd, you didn't say! If it is just a 2wd lawn tractor forget what I said, and break down and buy new (double spaced) chains that fit and figure a way to add weight to the rear of the tractor, unless you weigh 300# LOL.
