Any Ford Explorer, 4.0 SOHC experts here?

2000 Ford Explorer, with the notorius 4.0 SOHC motor, has a noise, after it runs for about 2 minutes, and never goes away after that. NO noise when the engine is cold. Already have the timing cover off, drivers side valve cover off, (it is louder with the oil fill cap off) but no damage anywhere, all the chains and guides look great. Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.

Never thought of that, have to try and figure out a away to see if that is it. Sounds more like a tapping sound, like possible valve train. It backfired, when tring to start it one day, and has done this ever since.

The ford V6 is 2 banks of 3, that face opposite directions. Resulting in 2 timing chains and 2 sets of chain guides. The guides are plastic composite material, which wear quite easily. Go onto youtube and search for 'ford explorer timing chain', there is a number of clips with examples of what they sound like when warm.
I had an explorer in Germany and it had the same sort of noise, and did a lot of research, the motor has to come out to do both sets of chains and guides...

Button it up and find it a new home the cost of repairs on those motors is crazy. Good friend just had a Mercury Mountaineer eat a 4.0 at 89K. I would never own a Ford 4.0 that was older than about an 2007. Yours being a 2000 is right int he range where they had all kinds of trouble with engine/valve train noise and timing chain failures.

Thanks, never thought about going to you tube, mine doesn't sound like most of those do, and I have mine opened up, ALL, of the front guides and chains are wonderful, no damage, compared to them. I guess I will pull the other valve cover, and see if it has bad guides on the rear of the engine.
