IH 1566 - Steering Problems Cont

Alright - anyone have any recommendations where to buy a pressure guage that can read 1900psi? Its not something one can find at Napa...then once I have it...how would I know what fittings to buy to thread it into the test port?

This is getting nuts...I've replaced the hyd steering pump - that wasn't the problem.

At very low RPM - I have some steerage and I have some brake and I have some clutch - when I first start the tractor - I have those things but only momentarily...Increasing RPM's shuts down any function of those things.

The manual pump in the steering column didn't work at first wheel kept spinning but then it seemed to work - but I got so much weight on the front there is no hope of turning it.

I added the additional 5 gallons of hyd fluid above the full mark - I'm about 1 to 1.5" above full on the dipstick.

I cannot find or see an relief valves other than on the MCV and I can read there is one on the manual pump...

What about that MCV pressure switch - I have 6V going to it

This tractor I bought from a guy who bought it from a landfill - its dirtier than hell and I can't move it to a hydrant to clean it and I'm not sure I want to - but its fairly difficult to see anything...

Further - the farm all around the house is subsoiled so pressure washing it out there - well you can imagine...I don't want to do that...

been reading all your going through,,,
no power steering,pump replaced,
still not working,in addition,
no clutch or brakes,
is hydralics working at all?
i'm no mechanic but i would hook up
a hydralic cylinder to check that out
it may be the master pump thats out...
or a clog vent somewhere,or lines
you might try going to the
red power forum site

just found something that mite help
go to red power magazine, forums, general ih
i found it on page 5 mcv troubles on 1981 1086
hope this helps

You can order a gauge from Northern.Take the plug with you as a 'sample' to get the right threaded fittings.Asked this before, does your 3point and PTO work?If they dont, you've found the problem.

just read about similar promblems on a 986
he too replaced the mcv to no avail
found out it was the clutch pressure plate
anyway you can get an inspection mirror in there with some good lighting???
his rivots were all gone

Hi
was this tractor heading in the hole for scrap or they just used it there till it puked.
I would go under the clutch housing take the plate off and see whats in there. if you have loads of bright steel filings or rivet heads chances are its the drive from the back of the clutch as its made from steel and riveted together. if its kinda grey cast iron type dust then it's probably flywheel metal worn off by the clutch lining material and not linked to your problem.

Thanks guys - that link over to Red power maybe helps.

Yea - the PTO and 3pt work great - no problems there.

I drained all the fluid and I have air in the fluid.

did a complete rebuild of the mcv to no avail.

Replaced the fluid with Napa premium - had a cheaper oil in there.

and during the rebuild of the mcv it became clear the former owner plugged the steering dump valve with an aftermarket plug - never was able to move the front wheels w tractor off and the steering wheel would not move after a couple spins around around it would lock up but not steer.

So I removed that aftermarket plug and installed the dump valve plug and spring and I still have no steering, clutch or break pressure - but when the tractor is off - the steering wheel just spins and spins w NO resistence at all....

So Now I'm thinking I maybe have a hand pump - no fluid leaks - at least not now - right before the probelm occurred one of the hyd lines was leaking pretty good but I tightened that up to stop fluid from dripping everywhere. Shortly after - my problems began...seemed unrelated til now.
