A local retiring farmer has his 4440 for sale. Nice clean one owner, quad range, 85% Goodyear radials and new front Firestones. Set of duels and front weights included. Tractor has 4000 hours. He had a smaller farm and most of the hours are from haying. He is very particular on maintenance, all repairs and maintenance done at the local Deere dealer. He is firm on 30K. Seems like a lot but for those hours? On tractor house there are only 3 4440's listed in the country with less than 5000 hrs. SO, I don't like when people ask these questions on here but I can't resist. Talk me in or out of this tractor, opinions? keep looking? I have been looking for a good planter/spraying tractor for some time.

$30K isn't a bad price for a 4000 hr 4440. They weren't called the "Iron Horses" for no reason.

The 4440 is a classic that will stand the test of time as one of the very best medium frame 2WD tractors ever. The 2nd best descendent of the 4020.

Well there is two ways to look at it. You can buy a tractor that is in good condition knowing the history of it and pay market value or a little more and hopefully turn out alright. Or you can buy one with no history,rough condition ,more hours for less and start praying.I have done both and have always turned out better on the ones i have know the owners of.I bought a 4440 15 years ago from a farmer I knew 3800 hrs very good condition,power shift,factory duals,weights,quickhitch for 25000.00. Ran it for six years pulled 12 row planter and grain cart. Sold it 5 years later with 4700 hrs for 26000.00 they do hold there value if kept up but everything is a gamble.
I would tend to agree, I've spent some time on my neighbor/farmer 4440, from duals and a 637 JD heavy disc, to pulling gravity wagons with grain, cutting hay with it on the JD disc mower which was new in '08. His had a lot of hours on it, and he finally had to do an overhaul on it, something was off when I was cutting, seemed like it could have let loose, so we took it out of service, when it was done sure as heck made a difference, he's had this one for 25+ years working on the 500-600 acres, 250 used to be in corn, the rest in hay, it just keeps going, and has served him quite well over the years. I never ran anything with a transmission like that before, one with the letters and numbers that you could shift within range without clutching, its been a few years since I have been in it, I had to make sure and have him explain to me how to use it, was a little different for me, but I got used to it in no time, proven tractor in the field in my book given the hours I've seen it work and the time I spent in it.

It is a little above the market price but the hours are a lot less than nearly all 4440's on the market. Hard to find one with less than 5000 hours.
If the owner will let you try it out for a day and all seems in order go for it.
You can put $10-15k repairs in a $25k tractor pretty quick.
I assume you have talked to the John Deere dealer about its condition and problems they may be aware of. Most dealers are straight shooters as you are a potential customer.

Factory 10 Duals, good rubber,low hours,original paint can easily add several thousand dollars to a nice tractor.Know of a 2wd 7810 that brought 80K+ and saw a nice 4040 3000 hrs bring 27K so you are not too far off.Had a neighbor call with a 6900 hour loaded 4440 and dealer would give 19/20K.I have had dealers appraise things and then ask them what they will write a check for and there is quite a difference.4440/4450/4455 were some of JDs best and are very popular right now as augers and PTO equiptment gets larger
