cattle sale

Went to stockyard today and bought 3 heifers, 300 pound range, cost $1.35 to $1>42 per poumd. Of more interest to the group is that they sold by load, groups of preconditioned calves. 700 poumd steers brought $1.25 to $1.35 per pound, heifers about the same. Lighter calves brought slightly less. Calves going through the regular sale in the same weight range brought about the same. Advantage for the preconditioned sellers as I see it is that their calves were weighed as they came off the truck and didn't lose weight in the barn, waiting to be sold.

Big run in that barn, over 1000 head, plus goats and a few hogs. This is in SC.

I sent two 5 month old black white faced steers, to the feeder sale, in CHehalis Wa.in Sept. They brought $145 Pr hun each. Was very happy. It sounds like the price is still holding up well!

Both sound cheap compared to here. A 300 lb heifer woud bring up to 1.55 for a really nice calf. 700lb steer would bring 1.40-1.55 for a good calf. The real expensive calves are the 500lb steers. Average about 1.75 and some are bringing nearly 2.00. Just bought 12 600lb char/limo cross heifers for an average of 1.395. Last year 450-500lb heifers were bringing a max of 1.70 and I don't think it's a whole lot different this year.
