Hey folks,
posted last winter or in spring about a mud problem... Someone (CRS) told me about and posted some pics of their barnyard prep using a sheet of felt or something on top of the ground before spreading rocks. my problem is an inch or so of soup that just gets worse with every trip. Not aloud to excavate (just the bare minimum to level things out) and don't wanna send rocks to china. Is that mat (felt?) something that can just be spread out and gravel spread over it?
Need to know what it's called and possibly a brand so I can figure out what it compares to here.

Thanks, Dave

There are a variety of fabrics that are used for road building purposes. We used them when preparing gravel roads in Southern Alaska. They are not felt, but more of a woven material that lets water pass but prevents the gravel from getting pushed down into the soil. I would think that the local gravel yard would be able to point you to a supplier.

I have seen Geo Textile laid out full width and full length of a road that was being built across a wet area. It was put down over the virgin earth before the 18 inches of gravel was put down. I have also seen it used as a wrap for the pipe and stone that was installed for under-drain where a new road was passing through a cut.

It is called Geo Cloth, or Geo textile or Geo membranes.Try "US textiles". Several brands are available. I buy it in rolls 12' or 15' wide and 360 ft long. About $370. Check your local farm store, many carry it for gatesways and for around waterer or under graveled areas.

Used a lot of that stuff in my Excavating business. Works great.
The reason for pavement failures is that when the subsoil gets wet, the mud is "pumped" up through the gravel course and then the failure occurs in the form of soft spots or potholes.
The material is a porous membrane that allowes the water to pass through, but not the mud, thereby preventing the failure.
I laid it under the gravel course in my lean-to horse shelter and the barn corrall.
