Plow upgrade for Stocks

I have a 4/16 F145H plow. I love the way these F145 plows plow except in corn stocks. I would like to upgrade to a plow that could handle corn stocks better and autoreset. Would a F145A be a big enough difference to be able to do corn stocks? I don't beleive that plow ever had autoreset. What would be the next level of upgrade with autoreset and more clearance for stocks? Land here is hilly, clay, and some rocks. I would prefer JD but if someone had really good experience with another brand I would like to hear that also. I pull it with a JD4320. Thanks. Paul

You may have better luck if you cut them up with a disk before plowing. Unfortunately clearance under the plow and between shanks is part of the issue, and there's not an easy way to change that. Do you have rolling colters to cut the stalks just ahead of the shins?

A 1350 or 1450 will have a bit more clearence than the F145 plows. A 4 bottom should work fine behind your 4320 maybe even a 5 bottom if you are in lighter soils.

I have a 1250 which is mounted but I have never plugged it in corn stalks but I'm sure it could happen if you covered enough acres.

BTW... I've never heard stalks called "stocks". Is that midwest talk? I've also heard stalks called "stover", but never stocks...

I had a feeling I was spelling stalks wrong. :)

Yes, I do have colters. I have found that if I put them forward ahead of the the shin as far as I can I have much better luck in stalks. I have played with the hight of the colters as well.

I have an operating manual for the plow, that is also helpful.

What are the thoughts on the 2600 JD plow?

Thanks again, Paul.

I have a 2800 4 bottom. I pull it with a 110 hp. f.w.a. In a good year I raise 200 bpa corn. I run across them with a disk and then plow them. Plug about once every 100 acres. But to be fair the 2800 is a vari-width plow and if you get good at it and are constantly watching for start of plug you can open it up and 9 times out of 10 it will go through. If you have any amount of acres to plow I would not consider anything but a vari-width. Can usually prevent plugging, can keep furrow absolutely straight, can follow along fence or road ditch perfectly by "steering" plow and can close dead furrows better.

The JD 145A would not be any different as far as clearance. You would need to get into the JD 1350-1450 to get much better clearance.

I think the White/Oliver plow pulls easier and lays the ground out smoother. I have owned JD and White. I currently have a set of White 548 and like how they work.

Models that are usually auto reset are the White 508/588 or JD 2500-2600. Even within that models the auto reset is an option. So you will have to check each one out to see how it is set up.

I work for a guy with a 2600 (maybe 2800?) Deere plow with vari-width, and in some conditions its just a dump rake, I spend more time turning around to dump out the corn stalks than going forward down the furrow. At home we had an International and a White/ Oliver, the White was definitely better in our conditions. I don't remember what model it was.

Have you tried dragging a #9 wire behind each Coulter (about 5' long of so)..??
Helps direct the trash through the frame..
Usually hooked onto the Coulter mount, right above the Coulter pivot (in front of the Coulter)..

You need to disc those corn stalks first to chop them up. Either that or get a PTO powered shredder. Even a bush hog type mower will get the job done. There isn't a moldboard plow made that will be 100% trouble free in cornstalks.

Another trick is to travel in a slightly perpendicular direction to the rows, but that trick isn't always possible unless your fields are completely flat.
