Bill of Sale for autos

Am going from Ohio to Georgia on this Thursday to pickup a used 99 Ranger 4x4 with blown motor. I need a rust free frame for mine.
What I want to know is, what do I need, or need to do, so I am protected in case of a stop by law enforcement along the way back...via Alabama, Tn, Ky, Oh.
There is no title with the sale per the owner.
Thanks in advance guys.

Bill of sale, but if the vin# comes back as stolen, it is called grand theft.

Even if you have a bill of sale a cop is going to hold you untill they find out why there's no title. I'd buy one closer to home with a title.

Doubt that you would need anything but the most you would need in Tennesse would be a signed bill of sale. I can,t think a 1999 ranger would be worth the effor of frame change. Are you going to use you existing title and body on the Georgia frame. ?

If you are buying the truck with only a Bill of Sale, i think you had better get to a notary, or whatever ya call them in your area, and have the previous owner/seller sign a bunch of legal papers, in case you are stopped by police on the way home! If you don't have the papers, a signed title won't keep yer bottom out of a jail cell. And, getting out will be a hassle. Trying to find the P.O. might be impossible. Especially if he didn't have a clear title, or ownership of the truck! Beware!

I doube much of an issue will be raised with a 13 year old car with a blown motor, but you never know after reading the previous post about the oldre truck inspection by a city cop. Stan

I've driven an old (1950) truck down I-405 near Seattle and had nothing but a handwritten bill of sale signed by the previous owner. I used that bill of sale at the vehicle license agency to apply for title, and received the title in the mail a couple weeks later, so I'd say that's all you need, at least here in Warshinton.

If you are hauling a vehicle on a legal trailer with a legal truck and legal driver I don't see the probable cause to check for a title, even if you are stopped for speeding or some other traffic offense. I know this ain't the land of the free anymore but I hope it hasn't gotten this bad yet. A couple of months ago I hauled an inherited vehicle 1100 miles across those same states and never had a problem though it never occured to me that there might be a problem, I did not have any paper work at all in my name.

You must live in Pa. need a title here for any thing. even to hual from scrap yard to ship heading to China, even after they are crushed, what a bunch of bull.

We bought this one new and just replaced the transmission last year, it has less than 120,000 on it, everything else is good.
What I plan to do is replace the back half, Ford done good when they built them with an overlap behind the front spring hanger on the back axle.
I am an old body man so this is nothing new to me to cut a few rivets with the torch and put it all back together like new....just my labor.
Then sell a few parts and junk out the rest.

I wouldn't do it either if I had to replace the whole frame.

Here is a pic of the rusted out mess..

bill of sale will be fine if its notarized, but if i were you before i put that thing on a trailer have the vin number run and make sure there is nothing in the trucks past that will cause trouble if there is it will show up on the dmv's computer when you try to register it in your name, sometimes a title is lost in which case you can apply for a duplicate title or a salvage title, other times there's another reason it doesn't have a title....

NYS DMV let me register a trailer with a "bill of sale" scrawled on the back of a used envelope. Of course I also had the title in hand.

In Ohio we don't need or have titles for trailers so they are pretty easy to get licensed. Cars and trucks are another matter.

I had a '94 Ranger that had rotted spring hangers (rear) that a shop over in Zanesville replaced for $75 a set... a bargain in my mind. The guys said they do 2 or 3 a day there. The frame was in good shape however, still solid, it just looked rusty bad.

have your registration papers for the trlr with you...
on return trip;
bill of sale with both your names on it
dated and signed
