model 1894 remington double barrel (pics)

I have a Remington model 1894 double barrel shotgun for sale. It has a 30 inch barrel. It has the damascus twist on the barrel. It has the automatic shell ejectors. It is an "A" grade. Serial #126904. I have been looking at them online and they range from $3000 for a fully restored one and $800 for a junk one. I want $1000 for this one or I will trade for a new Leupold VX-3 scope. If you have more questions I would be happy to answer. Thanks

Nice looking shotgun.
If that's what they're actually selling for I need to get rid of my gun
cabinets and get a gun safe!

I would like to get a gun safe about twice the size I need and keep other important things in there. Just havent spent the money on one yet.

I want to get a gun safe bigger than what I need X2.......then I can tell my wife I'm wasting that unused space and need more guns!

When I looked at one of these with damascus barrels, I was told they are not to be fired with any modern ammo. Unshootable I guess. Dave

(quoted from post at 21:48:16 11/04/12) Royse, a good gun safe will keep your guns "yours"
Agreed.
So will knowing how to use them!
Providing you're home that is. 8)

I went to a gun show yesterday, and a guy was selling t shirts.

One said, "Lord, when I die, please don't let my wife sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them".

Amen!
Same for my tractors!

When I visited my brother down CA thins year he showed me
his head high giant gun safe it was full of all kinds of guns
packed tight. Then later on we were down in his shop and
there was another identical safe filled to brim with guns. Later
he said that he got $400,000 for the 3 spots on his lungs and
just went crazy buying guns and going to dog shows until he
was broke. His daughter takes care of his money now.
Hey that's a very nice old gun they be used with low base
shells with no problem. That's if it is a true demaskas barrel

carried one of those in 16ga for many years ,really good quail gun. as far as the barrels go,theres damascus, then theres damascus.good damascus barrels are as good as any other, bad ones are unsafe PERIOD! these have good damascus barrels, and in fact were considered better than the steel barrels of the day,and you paid a premium to get them with damascus.if the barrels are not pitted badly,or dented etc,i would shoot it with modern lead ammo. and in fact i shot literaly thousands of rounds through mine.i wouldnt ever shoot steel ,or its equivalent, though. I am not suggesting anyone do it, but i have and would again on a good gun. theres a stigma to old shotguns with damascus barrels, but the fact is modern shotshells were developed to match old black powder loads very closely.great care was taken to match them simply because black powder loads had been developed to the point they were about maximized even with black. check a modern load ( unless its one of the modern specialty loads) and youll find pressures are almost identical accross the board.extra hard shot, wads, and shot cups that dont deform in chokes are what gets your guns.if you reload your shot shells, simply load them with felt cushion wads and cardboard overpowder and shot wads and things, even can load them with modern cartridge grade pyrodex if your afraid of your gun.but youll find in any good reloading book pressures remain fairly constant. if your afraid of one you shouldnt shoot it with ANY load period.

one other thing ,theres no such thing actually as "DAMASCUS TWIST"..damascus barrels were made by taking a fine wire, beating it flat over a mandral and soldering it together to make a tube.
twist barrels were made by taking a flat piece of stock spiraling it up the mandral and soldering the joint. if your barrels say anything "twist" thats the way its made. these were the weakest of barrels and the ones most likely to fail.the problem was not the steel, but the solder between the joints was weak, real damascus barrels were made up of many layers overlapping so the solder joints are much stronger than twist.the difference in a twist barrel and true damascus is daylight and dark. if you pick up a shotgun and you see a spiral going up the barrels, its a twist barrel, regardless of how its marked. true damascus wont show a spiral, and in fact its very hard to see the joints on a good damascus barrel. everyone liked to mark their barrels damascus, simply because it was a mark of quality. It was not the mark of a lesser grade in any way,but the mark of the best.
