White 8600 combine w/ 354 perkins

I have a White 8600 combine that has a non turbo perkins 354 diesel. My problem with is that it was loosing power and finally died and will not restart. It has a electric fuel pump beneath the fuel tank. I had cleaned the screen on the sediment bowl and replaced the fuel filters and put on a new electic fuel pump. When I open the petcock on the side of the injector pump to let the air out, I get good fuel flow and then it will quit with only air bubbles and then nothing. If I crank on it long enoughi will get good fuel flow again and then nothing. Fuel seems to coming out of the bottom of the tank at a good enough rate. The electic fuel pump seems to be pumping enough fuel. The engine does also have a mechanical lift pump that does not work and I do not think that has worked for some time according the the prevoius owner. Fuel flow seems to be the problem. Could the mechanical lift pump diagram have gone bad and plugged the line? I am at my wits end. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Its probably the worst way or wrong way to do it, but the only way I can get one primed, is to crack no.1 line at the injector(take nut right off), once a full flow is developed, start the nut somewhat, but loose, and then try it again and once it wants to fire I stop, tighten it all the way.

Almost sounds to me like you have a hole in the fuel line. That would be where I would start. Look for something that has rubbed in to, that will seal up with the "right" vibration, then open back up? Hard to figure things out when you can't see it, but I have had fuel lines do that have either rubbed a hole, or collapse.

Might be easier to run a new line from the electric lift pump right to the filters.

I have a 7300 with the 354. I had the same problem the first year I had it (2010). My problem was I had changed the fuel filters and the old ones had a copper washer under the retaining bolt. The new ones came with a rubber washer and I installed the rubber washer and left off the copper one. I could run it for a while and it would die. I replaced the copper washer and have had no more problems.
