Edinburgh, Scotland what to see?

Took the wife to the airport this morning, she is going to be there Sunday-Thursday. Work meetings start on Tuesday, so she has two days for sight seeing. Leaves me here with the three curtain climbers, again. Are there any "must see" things to do there, I think she is planning on hiking up a big hill of some sort? She will not be leaving Edinburgh.

On a tractor related note, Harbor Freight is 10 minutes from the Des Moines Int. airport so I picked up one of those nice toolboxes for $359.00, not as fancy as Snap On but better than a pegboard.

There are a lot of old and neat things to see there but sorry it has been around 35 years since I was over there. To bad she is not going in the spring or summer since the weather can be bad this time of year over there as in wet and cold and short days and long nights

The Hill has a magnificent castle on it that could take a day. The city has a wide variety of arts and crafts/museums and Historic places. Jim

Tell her to go to the bar in the North British Hotel on Princes Street and sample the malt whiskies. Last time I was there, they had 42 different ones! If she climbs the hill, the castle is at the top, that will take a full day to visit. The next day she will have the best shops in Scotland as she travels the full length of Princes Street. It is a lovely city of old buildings, her hotel should be able to advise her on what to see. Phil.

Nate,

I don't know if your wife has any interest in church/religious stuff, but Edinburgh was the home of John Knox who was the premier religious leader of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland back in the 16th century. The church where he preached is still there and there's a lot of historical stuff concerning him and the times when he lived.

I really recommend the site-seeing busses also. They are a great way to get an overview of the city and then you can go back later to any particular site that seems interesting to you.

I hope she enjoys it. My wife and I found it be quite interesting.

So, you're suggesting she go hang out at a hotel bar and sample 42 different whiskeys? I'd be surprised if Nate wants her to have that good a time.

Tell her not to look under a kilt , nothing is worn...everything is usually in perfect working order!!!!
And if she drinks the 42 types of whiskey she will not be walking up the hill to the castle next day!!!!
Just tell her to have a real good time!
Sam

If she likes a bit of everything she should walk the Royal mile up to the castle. It has everything from antique stores and a good tour called underground edinburgh to pubs. I was posted to the castle in the 1990's and a lot of people don't realize the castle is a working military base being the home of the Scottish divisions headquarters so it sometimes is closed to the public. Rose street has some great pubs and eateries. The one thing about edinburgh is no matter where you go there is always some connection to scotlands past. It has always been a good city to wander without problems.

Take a short train ride to Kilmarnic, and take the tour of the Johnny Walker bottleing plant--fantastic! Lots of free samples.

When I was in the Navy, that was a nice place to find a wife, but, I don"t know if I could tell you a place for your wife to hang around there. At least, I don"t know a place where she won"t get into trouble.
