Camshaft sensor Chevy Trailblazer ???

Have a '06 Chevy Trailblazer with the 4.2 inline 6 cyl. Showing a error code of P0014. That code is secondary (exhaust) cam shaft sensor. This engine has an adjustable (computer controled) cam for the exhaust valves. Typically that code is corrected by removing, cleaning or replacing the sensor. Believe the sensor is optical, and gets slugged up, as it is inside the engine, and gets splashed with engine oil.

Anyway, I need to know in general terms how to get to the sensor, how much engine has to be removed, etc. Want to know it this is within my capacity as a halfway decent shade tree mechanic, or whether I have to take it to a professional, and pay the big buck$..
 
If I recall Ray, it is right on the front of the engine. remove coolant surge tank, valve cover, and a few other miscellaneous things.

I have looked at one of those in 10 years, but I dont recall it being too hard.

Cam timing actuator solenoid . Pass side front top of motor . Just below valve cover . Duty cycle control to hydrualic cam timing . They get sludge or dirt in them . Pretty common failure . Last one I got from GM dealer was $70 -75 or so . 10 mm head bolt holds it in. think Power Steering pump needs to come off to get it out . 3 bolts on PS pump. Need scanner to clear code after replacement.
 
It is external . No need to pull valve cover,,,which on these is a bear,,intake has to come off to remove VC. We do quite a few of them .
 
Glad you posted, since you are up on the newer engines.
We werent in a real hurry when we did it, luckily.

I think that was a real short lived motor. 2002-2010, or somewhere thereabouts.

Give me a 350 or 454, HEI and a carb and I am happy.
