OT: promotion

My son-in-law got promoted to Sergeant today. He is an army Ranger and currently deployed in Afganistan. It was a "field promotion due to actions in the field". Don't know what that means yet. I'm both proud and much more worried.

Action in the field can be for a number if things. Like going the extra mile to insure others are safe or what maybe the bad way because the sergeant that was there is coming home in a box or by way of a hospital. Ether way I wish to best for him and hope he keeps his head down

jon f mn,

You have every reason to be proud.

Please tell your SIL "Thank you for serving/sacrificing for our freedom!". (Our military men/women do sacrifice so much for all of us.)

Congratulations!

I'm assuming this was a meritorious promotion, which usually occurs either for service "above and beyond", or for having skills and leadership abilities obviously beyond your present rank.

Not to be confused with a battlefield commission to Lieutenant, which usually occurs because you are the highest ranking enlisted man still standing up.

I'm not sure what his specialty is as I've never been in the military myself and he don't talk about it much. I know he's a Ranger and Airborn tho.

Please pass on my congratulations and my thanks for his service.
I'm another in the long list of veterans, so I appreciate his sacrifices as well as those of his family.

Promotion could have come several ways. One would be a shortage in the unit caused by a SGT being wounded or kill or absent for another reason, like emergency leave or busted for misconduct or pending court martial.....AWOL

Could be that he was on the list and made the promotion while in country (buddie's son made his SSG there that way). Could be for actions that warrented the promotion. You will just have to wait to find out.

US Army Rangers are now considered part of Spec Ops, lowest level. All are jumpers. Long time ago right after Viet Nam Ranger was just one more punch in your ticket for promotion as an officer ot infatryman. At that time most Ranger units were Ranger in name only and were in fact just regular infantry units with most soldiers not being ranger qualified. Like the 1/16 Rangers (Iron Rangers is what they called themselves) assigned to 1st ID forward in Germany. We called em "rusty Rangers". It was just a regular Mech INF unit.

Tell him thanks.

One of our neighbor's had a son that we grew up with and are still good friends made E7 SFC in Korea in 11 months in 1952. His granddad was a gun smith and gave him rifles with scopes. He was a crack shot. Hal
