hay injection

Has anyone used one of the systems for injecting protien and molassas into hay bales? Was wondering how well they worked?

I used one one time. It was a pain. I had to make two to four "injection sites" per bale and moving the wand was annoying and made a mess. I only unsed it one time on about 10 bales......never again. I now set the bale on end and simply "pour" the liquid supplement on the end of the bale. It runs down into the folds of the bale and moves throughout the bale evenly. "Some" bales are baled so tight that it doesn't work well.

I made one out of a centrifugal impeller pump and a piece of 3/4 steel pipe. I made a point on the one end and drilled a row of hole down the side. I put a valve on mine to shut it off when moving it.

I usually inject the molasses in 4-5 places around the bale. I like to do it a day or two before you feed it. That allows the molasses to spread in the bale.

I made it to use the first time in 1988. I feed some pretty crappy, dried out grass hay. The cows stayed in good condition with the supplement in the bale. Even good clean straw will work when injected.

JD - What sort of molasses do you use? Do you dilute it at all? How much per bale do you typically do?

NEBeef: I use a Quality Liquid Feed product. It is a cane molasses based product with the minerals already in it. I do not have to cut it with water. They are all over the world so you should be able to find a dealer.

I buy 500 gallons at a time. That is the least they will deliver free here. It keeps well, so some years I use a lot of it and other years not as much.

I usually get about 5-8 gallons per bale. It depends on the type of hay. In coarse grass you can get more in as the bale will wick it in better. In straw you will have to stick the bale in more places to get as much in. The straw will crush as it is bales and will not wick the molasses in as fast.
