oxygen and acetyline??

How is it priced for you folks? While cleaning the workshop, I found a complete set of torch heads I bought years ago and just got a set of gauges/hoses with check valves off ebay. Just need the tanks.

LOOK OUT!!!!

Place around the corner from work only services their own tanks. Sized in liters. 5,010, 20, 40, and a couple bigger.... Tanks (regardless of size) cost 30 bucks a year to rent and for 10 liters of Acetyline it's 51 bucks and Oxygen is 26 bucks plus tax and a couple fees... 280 bucks up front and and then tank rent after 3 years plus refills.......

Starting to question how bad I "need" it

I haven't had to buy any (own my tanks) for a couple years, so don't know the current local prices, other than what you quoted sounds incredibly cheap IIRC.

torch set is sorta like a shirt pocket. Extremely handy when you need it. Worth having around if you only need it once or twice a year. Can't imagine being without mine.

Go to a local discount joint and get their better chopsaw, too. It'll save you a bunch and make a cleaner cut on stuff you're fabricating...

If you want a torch to use buy your own tanks. I only use mine for heat and cutting so propane is what I use, only bought an Oxy tank. I may use it every day for a week then not for at all for months, just can't see renting.

Over here where we have a competition based economy things are much cheaper,I bought my tanks years ago and can exchange them for a full one at a whole lot less than you quoted.

MF Poor and I are on the same page, see what you can do about owning tanks, I forget the size of mine oxygen is about waste high, acetylene a little shorter, but I have 2 cutting rigs set up so I have the capacity of the larger set which seem to be just shy of 6 feet tall give or take. Its just one of those things that when you need it, its there and for the myriad of things you can do, weld, cut heat, I dont' care what the price is for the most part, I don't use enough of it for it to matter. Smaller capacity tanks might be a disappointment for any larger jobs, but the size I have is good, has enough capacity, easy to transport and for some reason I believe the larger ones had more restrictive regulation, according to the compressed gas supplier, 10 years ago.

I lease tanks as nobody within a couple hundred miles will fill "owned" tanks. I stopped using acetylene a few years back as it got too expensive. I keep a small tank around if I need to do any soldering or brazing but use propane for heating and cutting.

My oxygen tank is around 10-12" in diameter and 4.5' tall and costs 14 bucks to get filled. My acetylene tank is about the same diameter but only 2.5-3' tall and is like 70 bucks a fill.

If propane is available it is a much cheaper alternative fuel.

I own my tanks, but when they are empty, I exchange them for full tanks. Bring the empty tank to town, bring a full tank back home, but it it will never be the same tank I brought to town.

I missed the boat somewhere.... Just was taught as a kid to use acetyline and didn't know there was any other way...
Do you still need oxygen with propane? And can you weld with it (coat hanger or steel metal rod? Can you use the same gauges/regulators? I have propane tanks on hand.
Really don't even need cutting capabilities as I have 4 and 7 inch disc grinders. Just would like to be able to fabricate (heat/shape a few things around the place and patch some rust spots on the tractor fenders and weld up a couple cracks....

You use the propane in place of acetylene. Still need oxygen. Ever tried to cut with one of those Bernz-o-matic torches?

Cutting and heating only. Can't weld or braze with propane.

Need special torch tips, possibly different hoses. Regulator is the same.

Can't braze with propane? Jeez- I wish someone would have told me- I do it all the time, with excellent results.

Dave you will need a propane tip and you will be
good to go. We consider 40cf and down customer owned tanks and just exchange them. The most common
AC size is a #4,and the price is around 65.00(I rarely see a price I just deliver them) Our rental
price is $54.00 per year per cylinder. Propane is
not recommended for welding or brazing, what you do
with it is up to you:)

Same here. IIRC, Oxy was in the low $20s, Acetylene was $60s but I think the last time I got it filled was right after the plant blew up and prices were higher.

I I wouldn't rent. Like others said, mine will sit for a long time and then I'll use it for a day or so.

Napa will refill any bottle in good condition I trade mine in all
the time many other auto parts dealers do the same thing just
ask around. No rental fee when it's empty take it in for another
full tank no waiting.

Sometimes you don't have an option. I used to own my own tanks, then I went to exchange them and they said they don't do that anymore and the only place that will is almost 120 miles away one way.

So i pay 14 bucks a year to lease both my tanks and I can exchange them 5 miles from the farm. Once I started leasing I found out the exchange/refill $$$ is cheaper on leased tanks so with a couple of exchanges the lease fee is absorbed and then it is actually cheaper than owning.

ep, I rent my bottles also

I bought a life time oxy lease about 25-30 years ago and use propane in a 100lb bottle.

Oxy refile in my area is $28-32 large tank.

If you use propane get a good size tip for cutting at least 3/4 inch stuff or you will be cursing your torch set.

Just what I was thinkin. Have had propane for about 30 years and thats the first I ever heard that. Corse, I'm just a dumb wantabe farmer;-)

I just bought filled, full size oxygen, acetyline, argon, and argon/co2 mix cylinders two weeks ago. $980 after taxes.
