Tractor quiz

Why do some tractors that burn kerosene require large amounts of water and some use no water at all, some of you old timers put your thinking cap on!

I think our old 193? JD D used water. It would burn gas, had spark plugs, yet would burn kerosene or might have burned #2 diesel. I think it got the water from the radiator. Not sure why it burned water, only a kid at the time. I think there were two tanks on the JD D . Maybe the smaller one had gas and was used to start it.

Yep, water helped control detonation of the fuel which resulted in the "pinging" sounds and could result in engine damage and in addition to that it actually helped cool the engine in some tractor models. Rumely Oil Pull tractors commonly used more water amounts than fuel amounts when working near maximum power.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they also claim the steam expansion gave it a little more horsepower? Or was that a myth? Jim

I have a copy of The operation, care and repair of farm machinery, Eighth edition published by John Deere, no copyright date. The "modern" farm tractors illustrated are a John Deere D on steel and a GP, also on steel. In one of the paragraphs it states "some tractors are designed to use water under heavy load, on hot days, when pre-ignition is apt to occur."......"it is stopped by feeding water from the cooling system into the fuel mixture, the added moisture in the fuel holding down the engine temperature." A few pages later there appears to be an unstyled "B" on rubber pulling a 4 row cotton planter.
