Talk about Racing

Talking about tractor pulling made me think of racing. This was my car. After several seasons building and working on my younger brothers Late Model I built this car to beat a dominate 200SX sponsored by the local Nissan dealership and driven by the service manager. It took about 6 races to get the car sorted out and learn to drive it before I got My first win. We won 4 features that 1990 season and 5 the 91. We beat the Mega bucks team by hard work.

Did you ever bring it up to GPS, or Anderson? Those are the only asphalt tracks up here. I did a good bit of dirt tracking with a Baby Bomber Vega GT back then.

I just love to see the little guy,low buck team whip the high dollar ,hot shot butt. Dosen't happen enough in raceing.

This is me. I believe this picture was taken at Lincoln Speedway, Abbottstown PA in 1990. The car is a micro-sprint. 250cc 2 stroke on alcohol. Your Mustang reminds me of the King Cobra i purchased in 1978.

We went To Florence after our season was over for their final race of the season. It was pay back night and when a fight would break out the announcer would stop talking about the race and give a blow by blow account of the fight. It was a wild night and I was glad to get out of there. I did bring the car to Greenville and let Ronnie Hopkins set up the suspension.

Where I go to visit my in laws.. I listen to the races from their back porch at that track.

When he went out there from the west side4 of the state , he used to live in the stone house on the #1, and #2 stretch. His job for rent was taking care of the track.

Yep, Ronnie gave us some pointers on night @ 85 about a problem we were having with the rear end busting loose when either my buddy or I were driving, but it was only at 85. Anywhere else we never had the problem near as bad. Havent talked to him in many years!

My brother bought one of the last sportsman chassis they built before they went to nascar chassis building exclusively. They got to be really good friends. He came down and drove the car for him when my brother broke his thumb. Ronnie and his dad were super nice people.
Any pictures of your car?

I dont have any pics, but if I could get a movie from a VHS on to yotube, Id post it. There use to be some pics of it on some dirt track website after we sold it, but I cant find it, Color scheme was reversed from what we had, and the guy added a 0 tothe number. Ill try and find that after church today.

My oldest son helps work on this sprint car. They just finished up their season last weekend. I took this picture a month ago when the World of Outlaws were here in PA

If you've never been to a sprint car race, try to get to one. Amazing how fast these guys are on dirt!

Lots of strange and fun things happened during those racing years. One night I hit the front wall in a heat race. It took out upper and lower A arms and the front shock. One of my competitors offered a set of A arms and stopped and bought a shock on the way to get it. We got it put back together as our class was going out on the track. I got in the car hit the switch and nothing they check the trunk and the battery hold down had come loose and a cable was off. By the time they got it fixed and I got on the track I was 5 laps down. I figured I would stay in the back out of the way and at least check out the car. Got going and the car had never handled that good before. So I waded through whole field and came up on the Nissan and I know He is leading the race. The whole time I am watching the flag man for any signals didn't see any so I set him up and went right around him. I'm thinking well at least I got one lap back. I didn't go another whole lap and all of a sudden the car goes dead. I roll into the pits my crew finds the battery cable had come off as they bolted the battery down but did not tighten the cable. Track Steward comes by and says you made your point you don't need to go back out. There was only a few laps left anyway. Lots of people came by and said you showed them who had the fastest car. Only me and My crew knew the truth.

Years ago A friend and I went Carlisle Pa. to a swap meet. In the parking lot where we were staying there were several WOL cars. They were swapping engines on one of them. We went over and talked to them as they worked got some souvenirs. We went to the race that weekend and I don't remember the name of the track. To hear those cars and watch them go down the straightaway carrying the front tire in the air was truly and amazing sight.
