Cereal Rye as a cover for corn and soybeans

Will be getting the last of the corn and beans out in the next two weeks and was wanting to cover all my ground with cereal rye. Have any of you guys used it with good results or have any other suggestions? It will just be spun on as that is the most efficient for my time crunch. Thank You

If you spin it on, use 3 bu. per acre, then cut your stalks AFTER you spin it on with a rotary mower. The seed will drop to the ground thru the trash better.

this time of year, rye is the best. it will grow later in the fall than others. 2nd what don said.

if you're concerned about winter erosion and the seed is cheap/plentiful, don't be afraid to go much higher on the rate- it won't hurt anything except your wallet, if you're buying the seed, to go 4 or 5, even 6 bu/a

if you've got plenty of corn stubble to hold the soil and just want something growing, 3 bu sounds good to me.

Thanks for the advice this will be my first year of cover crops and im anxious to see what effect it will have. 90 acres of corn stubble and 60 acres of bean stubble. The bean ground is what im most concerned with for erosion control, building the soil with organic matter, and getting good deep roots.

The rye will work best this late in the fall. I would not work the bean ground at all so it would need to be no-tilled in. In corn stalks I usually just mix the rye in with the Potash I am applying for next year then just lightly disk it in. The stalks get cut up a little and the rye and Potash gets worked into the ground. I did some this fall three weeks ago and it is just coming up now. The ground was so dry it just laid there until we had some rain last week.

We sow ours with a double disc opener grain drill and pull a cultipacker behind.The openers stir up a little dirt and the cultipacker helps with seed to soil contact.Sometimes in hard ground we run a light disc over the field either before or after seeding(we have done either way and see no difference)
