40 + year old tractor can vary from junk to very nice.Tires ,motor, clutch ,TA on IH can make thousands of dollars difference.I do know newer tractors such as the 86 series are fairly reasonable for what you gain .4010s are bigger and handier.I like 1206s for their look but they like the 706 dont shift the greatest and the rear end are a little noisier but the motors especially the German Diesel were very reliable in their time.Hydraulics werent the best on IHs

I'm an IH guy. If its a German diesel 310 model its a good powerhouse although the shifter is a bad dream. A 706 gasser or 282D I'd have to think about it.

I thought the 706 would be newer than a 4010? 4010's were 1960-1963, 706's were 1963-1967. The 4010 is a bigger older tractor. Comparable IH would be an 806 but a little newer and a few HP bigger. If looking between two specific tractors condition will be a big factor. Next question is do you need the bigger tractor? What kind of dealer network do you have in your area? You're not exactly comparing apples to apples here. Both are good tractors with a strong reputation you'll have to figure out which one better fits your needs or gives you the best service for your money.

I have a 4010 synchro and like it alot. Never ran a 706. One flaw of the 4010's is the PTO stub shaft cap screws can work loose and shear off the shift pin if running. I drilled holes in the cap screw heads and threaded stainless wire thru. Done. Usually, 4010's are a real bargain. You won't be sorry if its in good shape.

i have had a 4010 since 1981. it was my big tractor then. it is more nimble than the 806 (706's big brother) that dad bought in 1967. it has good power. the 4010 has 2 major flaws. all the hydraulic lines are external and steel. lots of places to crack and leak, although by now the one you are looking at may be partly converted to rubber hoses. the other problem is the design of the brakes. if you spike them in a panic stop, there are pins that can shear off, drop down to the bottom of the transmission, and come back up cleaning teeth off other gears. btdt 2x.
when the 4010 is working well, it is a lot nicer to operate. the 706 is more likely to keep plodding along without needing as much attention.

4010 is a few years newer and about 25 hp biger than the 706. both are tough as nails.

Get the later 706 with the 310 diesel. It will run the 4010 right out of the field, using less fuel at that.

If they are similar in tire wear, engine hours, and usability to you, they are probably equal. If there is a 2000$ price difference buy the IH. If the JD is closer than that buy the JD. And I am an IH fan!!
