What is every ones opinions and experiences with the Ford 5.4 and v10 gas motors in the heavy pickups..............I can't really justify a diesel.............but I could be persuaded............what do you think ?
Thanks,
Tom

nephew bought a v 10,kept it a year and traded it off.didnt like the performance of it pulling his heavily(probably way too heavily) loaded trailers.went back to the dodge diesels. thats the extent of my dealings with them,i never could bring myself to spend that much money.

I did the math when I purchased a new 3/4 ton pickup in 07. At that time, I figured I would have to drive it about 90,000 miles to justify the extra 9200 bucks for a diesel. The gaser I brought has about 35,000 miles on it after 6 years. It does everything I need it to do.
I have never had a truck with those engines so I can't help you much there.

dont have much info on the 5 .4 but run, dont walk away from the v-10, oh its a decent engine, lots of power, but it comes at a cost of about 6 mpg! my good buddy bought a dodge with a v-10 as he thinks he gets enough diesel noise in his 2012 freightliner on the road, he absolutely hates that pickup! San Angelo TX to Albuquerque NM, took 7 tanks of gas, and he was running empty! no load, trailer or nothing, the freightliner does better than that grossing 80,000 lbs , you simply cant beat a diesel if your going to drive it, more cost up front but it will out pull and more important it will outlast a gasser by a huge margin, if your say in your 50's or so if you buy now, you wont need another pickup, if you take care of it , my old 12 valve Cummings is going strong at 250,000 miles im leaving in 1 hour to do a 2500 mile road trip, and i don't plan to replace this pickup, the new one in my post above is for my wife, she just don't know we bought it yet..., if your just going to go to the big box store on the weekend and to work during the week the 5.4 will at least get better mileage than the v-10 just don't know how long they last..

They beat gas/diesel and 5.4 or 6.8 to death with no clear winner for the most part.

The 5.4 is in my F250 crew cab. When its loaded down and Im pulling a trailer I can feel it work, but never had any problems, great general work truck...lots of room in the back and front...
The V 10 is in my F350 flatbed. Loaded down "heavy" in the field and legally heavy with a trailer on the road... handles it extremely well. I don"t feel anything except the money going out of my back pocket. The key is that I don"t drive it more than once every 2 or 3 weeks, and then only short runs. It was cheap to buy (used) and I have done nothing to it. If I only had one truck and was driving it regularly I would be looking for the 7.3 L dsl.
Buddy just bought a 2012 f250 with the new gas engine 6.2??? Fuel mileage is OK and power seems fine, but he hates everything else about the truck.

Must be something wrong with the chevy gasser. I get around 9 with my 6 liter pulling a 35 ft, at highway speeds, sometimes faster

I think you will find Ford has been selling a lot of V10's for vocational trucks because they are the only engine that people who needed to make a living with their truck trusted from Ford anymore. Maybe with the very latest the diesel is better but for awhile they were garbage.

I run chevys with an 8.1 and one with a 6.0, with the 8.1 I honestly don't desire to own a diesel, a little more at the pump but I save everywhere else.

This spring I bought a 2007 F-250 shortbox extended cab with the 5.4L and 4.10 diffs. I use it for a work truck, pounding up rough logging roads, usually with a full slip tank of diesel, a few pails of oil, and a few hundred pounds of tools. It also pulls the gooseneck shop trailer around. I'm happy with how it's been handling it. Not gobs of power, but holds its own. Just rather thirsty. I get around 12-14 mpg (imperial). Never checked with the trailer on.
Two things to really watch on the 5.4L; Change spark plugs regularly, and have a good mechanic do it. Truck had about 130,000km on it when I did them. I broke 5 of them. Got them out with the extractor tool, but wasn't much fun. And if an exhaust manifold starts leaking, get it fixed sooner rather than later. I left mine too long; warped the manifold so badly it couldn't even be milled. Got a little expensive.
All in all, to me, the 5.4 is a pretty decent engine. It's treated me okay.

I have a good frend who has a v10 ford and I have gone on a few long trips with him. It is a powerhouse, it handles a 25 foot trailer loaded with two tractors with ease. However, it likes alot of fuel and the crankshaft broke on it once. we take my ford diesel on long trips with the trailer most of the time. It will get from 12 to 14 with a loaded trailer and in the 15 years and 100.000 plus miles ive driven it all that it ever has needed is glow plugs. The v10 will blow it off the road though.

There might have been something wrong with the gasser (08), but 2 trips to the dealer failed to find it. I also do not know what ratio rear end he had. He got so discusted with the whole setup that he sold it all after the second season and went back to a car and motels.

Worst I ever got from my "97 Ford F350, 7.3 diesel, was 10 mpg pulling between 8,000 and 9,000 in hilly terrain.

With no load, I get 20 mpg on the highway.

P.S. is a crew cab, long bed.

I believe he is referring to the Ford V10. It is a good engine and gets good fuel mileage for what it is. My aunt has a 99 model class A 35 ft motorhome with one in it. 120k miles and not a single issue. Will get 10-11 mpg and doesn't drop below 10 running 65 mph+. It has the banks kit on it though. Long tube headers, air filter, and I don't know what else? I believe the rear end gear is like 5.34 in it but I'm not positive.

The Ford 5.4 had spark plug issues in the earlier ones. I think after about 2003 they had most of them worked out. They had aluminum cylinder heads too thin at the spark plug. They would strip the plug out of the head. They do have a repair plug/kit that will fix most of them.

Power wise they do fine with light to medium loads. Real heavy loads they are not made for that. They are kind doggy then.

The V-10 motors hold up fine but they get terrible gas mileage. I mean 5-6 miles to the gallon.

My neighbor has a 5.4 in his pickup and it needs plugs. Plugs are $10 apiece and 5 hours labor to put them in, if no problems.

I know the fords are bad on fuel, we have had a v10 and two f150s with the 5,4s neither one ever seemed to get over 10 mpg. I have always been a dodge guy, the hemi has plenty of power and if you drive it nicely will get 15mpg in the 2500 never had a 1500 and I know the cummins is the best diesel, might not have the best transmissions though but there new 6 speed automatic improved from the old 5 speed though, if not get it in a manual

Tom, I have a new style 97 F-150 4.6 V8 Auto 4x4 LWB Supercab,,Built June of 96, has 345K on it now, had to get it to emission for State Inspection yesterday. So cleared all codes on Monday and ran it 300 miles while working on Tuesday Got 14.3 MPG Not bad! OBTW passed emissions with no problems (bad gas cap)
Have a 04 Expedition 5.4 V8 4x4, 120K, gets 15 mpg All Day Long.
Our old Expedition 5.4, 4x4, 240K 15 mpg the day we got rid of it!
My 01 F-350, Crewcab, Single wheels, 7.3 Auto, 3:73 gears, 4x4, 225K, 15/16 mpg all day long , with no trailer, with trailer 10/12 mpg.
A neighbor has a Dodge Megacab with the gas Hemi, pulling a trailer with 15k,...about 6mpg Bob tailing around 10 mpg
Here in North Central Texas a lot of Farmers / Rancher are fixing up their old Crewcab Dsl monsters, putting them back in the shed and using them for pulling trailers and such. The trend...For daily work, Guys are going back to Regular cabs, Flatbeds 4x4, Gas, with Cake Boxes & hay spikes,... lighter in wt don't get stuck as much! $35K cost is easier to swallow that a $55/60K Dsl The 6.2 gas Ford is pretty popular Down here. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

I have a 2006 F350 with the 5.4 and it is what it is. The diesel sure would be nice when pulling that cattle trailer, but I couldn't justify the expense up front. The mileage with the 5.4 is pretty awful, maybe 12 with a tail wind, so again the diesel would be nice (although if you're doing real calculations on cost per mile remember to figure in the difference in price between gasoline and diesel fuel - about 11% in my area.) But again, the up front cost is a killer, not to mention the added maintenance expenses. So if you need the power and want to spend the extra $$, you get better mileage as a added benefit. But I'm not sorry I stuck with the 5.4 for my needs, it certainly won't win any races, but it does the job...
