I have a can coil that has the message on the outside. "12v, for use on breakerless ignition, use external resistor" what is the difference in the coil from an ordinary coil used in a point system? The internal LV res is 4 Ohms and the HV res is 7 Meg ohms? Thanks

dont know exactly, maybe something to do with inrush currents? basically the current spikes as points or things close/open.since electronic ignition switches faster you would think inrush currents would be less (maybe?).Ive never seen one marked like that either. just guessing,i really dont have a clue.

have seen that on Motorcraft coils on Ford engines, but have no idea why they use "breakerless" moniker on there. Doesn't seem to me that the coil cares whether current is switched by a semi-conductor device or a contact. However, you might want to re-check the primary resistance, as 4 Ohms seems too high, most especially since it calls for an external resistor. I would expect about 1.1 for primary and 1.5 external resistor for a total of 2.6 in those Motorcraft systems. Maybe they are just trying to say, " 5 amps is too high for points!"

boler76........typical 12V roundcan coil primary resistance is about 4-ohms and secondary is about 7,000-ohms for about 20,000V sparkies.

I suspect the XSTR ignition don't like 4-ohms as it will draw too much AMPS and burn out the XSTR. I have NO IDEA what value of external resistance to use. ........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

(quoted from post at 06:24:27 10/24/12) OK that explanation makes sense Thanks
ot really. Dell has it bassackwards. Many 12v EI coils are a fraction of an Ohm..........far too small in Ohms for points (far too much current).
