exhaust manifold/stack temp???

Hey, Anyone know about how hot an exhaust manifold and muffler stack can get (diesel motor)??
while I've got the manifold off, was going to paint it along with the unpainted stack and adapter. Just ran across a brand new can of rustoleum high heat black for grills... Says up to 1200 degrees... Think it's OK???

Thanks.

When dad ran a pyro on his 1066 the in manifold temp was around 1,000 to 1100 max. Anything over 1200 and dad was worried about melting a piston. After the turbo those temps are probably around 900 or so. Not sure how hot you could get a N/A engine, but I know I could pull a bright orange flame out of dads Case 830 diesel.

Dave2! Try using an approprate deg. temp stick, on your stack, and it will tell you if you exceeded the temp you need. I used to get them from the tool room at Boeing, for use on bearings, and I am sure that they bought them from somewhere, like Grainger, or Carr McMasters. They are available in a lot of temperature ranges.

Dave your little tractor should not get hot enough for the 1200 degree paint to work. I had a JD 5020 that we had a turbo on and the fuel turned up. It would get to 1000 degrees after the turbo. That would turn the stack cherry red. At factory setting very few diesel tractors would get over 800-900.

This is the cheap stuff, so I'll try it. Had some real (read expensive) stuff once that I didn't read before spraying and figgered since it would stand hi temps it must be real tuff...... Shoulda read the part about a minimum temp to dry/cure it  Was a real PITA to get off the inside pickup bed walls..... Looking back, maybe a hot air gun would have fixed it....
