How much oil do I need to add to my WD?

Just checked the oil in the WD tonight. I see she is sitting on the BOTTOM of the FULL line. How much oil do I need to add to put her to the top of FULL? I've got a quart of 10w30 but I'm unsure if I would need to use a half or a whole to get there.

You dont need to add oil till it gets down to the
ADD/LOW line. Then add the full quart. If it is a fuzz
overfull,its fine.

(quoted from post at 20:22:14 10/20/12) Should be like most engines and a full qt is what will fill it up.

Excellent. Thank you, sir.

Well, the old WD just has a stamped section that says "FULL" and then below that, nothing. So technically, this would be in the add/low area, I think.

Strange question.Dip stick just gives you an indication that the oil is a bit low. Most sticks are marked add oil when a quart low.You should have an owners manual for your tractor.

I will 'second' 36's suggestion, you REALLY need an owner's manual...It will be the cheapest 'accessory'you will EVER buy for your tractor.

I sold tractor manuals for a while but the demand was low. Most tractor people like to mooch info on a 2000 buck computer.

I have a manual (three of 'em, actually -- 2 originals and a reprint). But this handy piece of information I could not find. It tells me it has a 6 quart capacity. Not how much low it is when it hits that mark on the dip stick. Apparently was not deemed an important piece of information in 1953. In fact, I have probably a dozen manuals for this tractor and manuals for various equipment for it (plows, disc, cultivators, etc.).

Manuals are nice, but they don't always have every piece of information in them. It never hurts to ask.

(quoted from post at 20:57:59 10/20/12) Quart will do it. Seriously, wouldn't a bit of experimentation solve the problem?

Eh... Yeah. Except I've only got 1 quart of oil left so if it was more than that, I'd need to stop at the store before going back out to the shed.

When I had this with mine, 1 quart brought it up half way, ended up that at that spot on the dip stick it needed 2 quarts. Oil requirements are 6 quarts for full oil change with filter.

Ah, good to know. Will stop at the store tomorrow and buy a second quart just in case!

I really think dont think you asking a bad question.

My new to me Case 580SE backhoe tells you how much to add imprinted on each dipstick. I thought that was helpful. Saves a little time, yet I still double check after adding to make sure it is hitting the full line. But it is nice to know whether I should dump in a quart or a gallon.

Rule of thumb I use, if it is an engine 6-12 quart system, start by adding quart. If a hydraulic 10-20 gallon system, its probably a gallon you will add. This seems to be close based on what the dipsticks say on my 580.

Just for comparison:a General Motors,Electro-
Motive Division 16V645,(V16, 645 cubic inch"s
per cylinder)Locomotive holds 450 gallons in the
crankcase. Between low and full on the dipstick
is 50 gallons!

Just for the curious among you -- Went out and put a quart in it. Waited to see what would happen, and it brought it up 2/3 of the way to the top of the full mark!
