speedi-sleeve installation question

I was reading on speedi-sleeve's website about the product and it stated for removal to warm it with a hair dryer (of heat gun, can't recall 100% on that). Stating that it will cause the sleeve to swell and slide right off. My question is could you do that for the installation also or would this cause perminant distortion?

No distortion if you don't over do it.

Cool the shaft and heat the sleeve.

Or if it is a internal sleeve. Cool the sleeve and heat the housing.

If you Google "Speedi-sleeve installation" it shows you how to do it successfully. They come with a driver.

It's one of those things where just because a little is good doesn't mean more is better.

You don't want it glowing red - if you have to get it that hot you've got the wrong size.

It really comes down to what your clearance is. In some cases a hair dryer might be enough - but more likely a heat gun on low would be the way to go.

One note if you cool the shaft instead of heating the sleeve (or both) - I've done it by putting it in a freezer - then take it out and what I didn't consider was freezing condensation getting in the way of things. This time of year it might not be so bad - but something to consider.

That's why I think heating is the best approach.

I've never had to heat to install or remove a speedi sleeve from a spindle or shaft.

I've always drove them on right out of the package.

To remove them I take a sharp chisel and lightly hit it in several different spots around the sleeve just to swell it not to penetrate the sleeve. They come right off!

It does not take much force to press on a speedi-sleeve. All it takes is a little chamfer or edge break on the end of the shaft, some lubricant and the right diameter pipe sleeve or deep well socket to go around it and then press or tap it on square to the shaft. I leave the flange on if it won't cause a problem, just in case I want to re-position it later.

Measure the wall thickness of the speedi-sleeve, you will find that it's only a few thousanths of an inch thick. If it is too thick it would not work well with new seals without changing to a different seal size.

It is not really worth the time to heat a speedi-sleeve because the thermal-mass is so small it will quickly cool down to the shaft temperature as soom as it contacts the shaft, before you can slide the sleeve all the way on.

I can't say if the hair drier would work for removal, I've never worn one out. A small torch would likely work quicker.

Hello bkpigs,
Speedi sleeve come with the installation tool.
You put them in dry. Take them off any way you are confortable with. Chisel, heat source, your choice.
Guido.

The reason I was asking is that I have to put the sleeve at the end of an axle next to the hub. Too far for the installation tool to reach.

Hello bkpigs,
THen make one up that works, but put the sleeve in dry and cold.
Guido.
