I was wondering if anyone had any experience, good, bad, or in between, with Subaru small engines (20 &25 gross hp), I have a Case 446 lawn tractor that coughed its Onan cookies and I am planning to repower it this winter. A local industrial supply house is now handling these engines and the dimensions are such that it should fit in without too much difficulty. Plus the price is very competive w/Honda. i only became aware that Subaru made small engines recently and wondered if anyone could share their experience. Thanks

Subaru has been making HD small engines just as long as Honda. They were first introduced to the USA under the Wisconsin Robin name. Then started selling under their own name Subaru or Subaru-Robin. If anything, they are rated as more rugged then Hondas. For years, Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries) has been active in the industrial market, whereas Honda has been active in the consumer/homeowner market.

Yes, their website heading is Subar- Robbins, and I also saw where they were owned by Fuji Heavy Industry. They certainly look rugged compared to some other makes.

Fuji Heavy Industries is an old company and makes many, many things - including the Subaru cars, aircraft components, etc.

I was working for a Wisconsin engine dealer then the new line of "Wisconsin-Robins" first became available. At that time, there weren't any Honda small engines that I know. Honda showed up mid-70s with their small engines.

My generator has a Subaru Robin on it.
Obviously not as big as you are talking about, but I will definitely buy one again.
I've had it for about 6 years.
Its a generator. Rarely used, sits around most of the year.
Starts first pull, EVERY time.

Last year I bought 3 small Subaru Robin engines from Small Engine Warehouse to repower different things. I'm impressed, they're good engines.

My generator also has a Subaru Robin, I've had it for about 8years, since it is rarely used every time I run it I shut off the fuel valve and let it run until it runs the carburetor dry.

Then every 4 months or so I drain the gas and use it something else and put in new gas in the generator. Since I retired it only get used for Power out situations and I want it to start.

The unit has always started very good. I have never had a problem with the unit and it never uses any oil between changes

I have a 6.5 hp subaru on a go-cart. My 10 year old grandkid can start it. I love it, trouble free.

Fuji Heavy Industries also own Mitsubishi. Robin/Subaru are the number one small engine in Japan. Wisconsin was the Robin distributor in N. America for many years but Robin decided to market their engines themselves when the agreement ran out. Robin engines are marketed as industrial engines where as Honda's could be sold by just about anyone. Robin engines are every bit as good or better than Honda engines and so are their generators and other power equipment. Look at a JD inverter generator, it's a Robin/Subaru as is some other JD branded equipment.
