With a team of runaway work horses, Dang them things are big when theys running full blast with a upside down logging cart beehind them and comeing right at ya!! They ran to the left into some pucker brush when I hit the binders. Boss and a helper bailed out one side of the van to get them stoped, I bailed out the other side to stop the cars comeing round the bend behind us. Teamesters came a running up the road beehind the horse, been runing after em for 500 or a 1000 feet. No one hurt though not even the horses. Sorry no pics., Happen too dam fast.lol.

Several years ago, a young gal, early twenties, who worked as a police dispatcher, was out for a horseback ride one evening when she approached a railroad crossing on a remote road. A train was also approaching the crossing.

The horse panicked and tried to cross the track in front of the train. Instead of bailing out, the gal stayed on the horse and tried to stop him. They hit the train and were both killed.

It's scarry. I've only seen one short runaway and it was an awsome sight. A few years ago a friend of mine was in an old horse drawn wooden wheeled school bus when the team spooked and took off down a gravel road. They had just dropped a load of kids off so only my friend and the guy driving the horses were in there. They thought the rickety old bus was going to fly apart. Both of them were laying on the floor with their feet against the front wall of the bus, pulling on the reigns as hard as they could but the team kept going. They went about a half a mile before the team calmed down and casually walked back home. They will never haul kids in that bus again if it's horse draw.Jim

" Teamesters came a running up the road beehind the horse..."

Wow, I have never seen a Teamster let something get away that was doing the work for them.

Ok, that is a joke, just wondering who will pick up on it.

Rick

Heard on the news today that two Amish girls (in Iowa) were hurt when their horse bolted across the highway in front of a semi, taking the buggy with him. One was life-flighted to a Des Moines hospital.

About 60 years ago when we were using horses for haying, my cousin was backing the haywagon out of the barn and down the ramp. One of the wheels went over the side of the ramp spooked the horses and they took off across the road and up the driveway by the house. My elderly grandfather who was sitting on the bench outside of the house jumped up, as best he could for an old man, got in front of the team grabbed the bridles, and yelled whoa you sons a britches or something like that and stopped the in their tracks.

I saw a horse bolt some years back pulling a 2 wheel cart. The girl who owned it had stopped to answer the barn phone. And, she left the gate open. Bad move. The ringing phone set it off. Horse ran about a mile before it stopped. The cart lasted about 30 seconds.
