Walt Davies?? Or anyone from Oregon.....

The mountains in eastern Oregon are one of my favorite places. Joseph, Oregon is kind of the end of the road, so to speak. Lots of history, beautiful area. I go elk hunting out in the Blue Mountains every year. If I didn't need to make a living, that is where I would live.

We bought a horse there and the transporter said he had to drive a hundred or so miles in then backtrack (as apposed to just cutting back in to the interstate farther south).... Just got curious and was looking at the map.....

Joseph is at the end of the road. Once you get there you pretty much have to turn around and back track to LaGrande to go anywhere else.

Yep, the closer you get to the Snake River, the steeper the Blue Mountains become. Snake River Gorge isn't the Grand Canyon, but you get the idea. About the only thing past Joseph is grazing range.

In steep country like that, there are little criss-crossing ledges on the side hills. A kid from Washington State U. was doing a thesis on them, had a geological theory on what caused the land to move like it did, etc. Some old farmer was talking to him, heard his theory, and said, "You need to go about a quarter mile up this road, where there's a line fence that's been there ever since this country was settled. You'll find all the little ledges stop at the fence."

Of course it was true, because the little ledges are the trails where cattle and sheep graze the side hills. Poor guy had to abandon the whole thing and pick a new topic.

Sorry Dave I live on the west side counties out here are bigger
than states are back east. It's a long drive from here to Eastern
Oregon.

Just curious... Sounds like a nice place to visit... Only thing I saw of Oregon was from I-5 28 years ago..... Wanted to look around some but the practice wife was nagging...........
Some other time I guess....

Dave, I am west of Portland and am only learning about the east side of the state a little at a time. My wife is stuck in the house 24/5 so she really needs out on the weekends. We do "point the truck and go trips" frequently, but me being a cheapskate, we usually do same day trips to avoid the motel bill ( the travel trailer is gone ). I think you need to come back and spend a week or two exploring and enjoying. Every part of the state has something different.
