Ford 5610 injection pump

Please can any body tell me if the cav injection pump on my ford 5610 is lubricated by the diesel fuel passing through it. I have a manual which shows a different pump (probably a later model) and the manual says to regularly check the oil level in the pump and top it up with engine oil. I think that I have missleading information and would appreciate any advise on how the cav type pump is lubricated. Thanks.

The rotary pumps use fuel as lubricant. The inlines use engine oil - from their own reservoir, or from the crankcase (supply and drain lines running to the block) on newer models. The info in your manual is for pumps that do not have the supply and drain lines.

The Simms injection pumps Ford uses do have to have the oil changed in them. I am not sure if the Ford 5610 came with a Simms pump or not.

I do know that the CAV pump does not have a separate oil system. It uses just the diesel fuel as the lubricant.

CAV and SIMMs in-line pumps use motor-oil in the cam box. Some must be checked and filled manually and some self-fill from the engine oil-reservoir.

It's rotary-distributor pumps that only use the diesel passing through as lube. This includes versions of Bosch, CAV/Lucas, Diesel Kiki, Stanadyne/Roosamaster, AMBAC, etc.

I've had to fix many Fords with cam boxes that ran out of oil. Sometimes you can get a pump-plunger unstuck with a pry bar, fill with oil and all is fine. And - sometimes not.

Thank you to everybody for your help. It is clear to me that I have a rotary pump and as you say, that type uses fuel oil for lube which answers my question. There are no oil fill up plugs nor any oil lines into the block. Thanks once again. Rob.

C.A.V. pumps on those tractors are lubed by fuel. Minimec pumps are oil lubricated. Either way, on a 5610, they should be maintenance free.
If yours is a blue decal it should have the CAV/DPA pump. Black decal will have a Minimec pump until the very late ones went back to CAV/DPS pumps. If by some ODD occurance you have a tractor/engine prior to october 1985 with a Minimec pump... then you need to check the oil level in the pump cam box.
