Hyd motor what to do with idea

Well the boy and I have been thinking about what to do with the 2 motors we have now and thinking about building a mini tank. Most of it would not be hard to figure out or come by but the tracks are the one thing I am not sure where to find. Any body have any ideas other then taking them off my Cletrac HG which I do not want to do and I also want them so I can run on the road for parades etc.
Thanks

I saw a mini RC tank at a show and he made the tracks out of heavy (maybe #80?) roller chain, welded the pads to each link.

How long lasting do you want this thing to be? They used to take tractor tires, cut the beads out and mount them over two car tires.
Depending on the scale of the tank, take something like a 24 or 28 and stretch them over some small tires if you're building something small.

Well we also want them to sound like a true tank track would sound when going like the sound my HG makes. Yep already thought about taking an old tractor tire that has the side wall bad but those would not last long and I prefer to build it once and then play not have to keep working on it

That is about how Struck dozers were made. They used 2 runs of detachable link (manure spreader apron chain), and welded ears on the chain, then bolted pads to the ears. Personally I like the idea of the cut out tractor tire, and 2 axles, with car wheels and tires to stretch it over. You could always add some bogey wheels made from torsion axles, like from pop up campers.

Saw this on one of these pages a few days ago.

Meni excvator tracks (ruber) are down to around a grand a side new.. Check with some of the rental places and get a pair of worn take offs.Want squeak but would give a track sound driven on hard ground or pavement. You could also use something like the smaller dozers if you want to go that big. I am thinking hydraulic motor drive you are going to have to stay down smaller. Have piles of valves iy you are going to use a valve for the steering control.

i have an old brengun carrier from the war if your interested in making some kind of deal ,,,id go for it ,,,,it might and i know it would make a great starter project for the boy and you to spend time building a wartime toy (i know i would have love that wheni was a kid )

I think that you should make tracks as others have suggested out of old tires running on some small tires. Then you could make it RC and mount a semi automatic hand gun on it. So then you could run it indoors and be able to run it around and shoot the cockroaches while you sit in your easy chair.

You need a fair size hyd. motor to use as a drive motor and then you need the proper valves and pump(s) which might get expensive.

This may or may not help. A long time ago I worked some at a copper re-draw plant. Basically it turned 1 or 2 inch hard wall copper into the annealed coils you buy at the hardware store. Anyway the drawbenches there used a very heavy chain made out of flat steel.

One could weld plates onto each chain link to make tracks. You could cut the sprockets out of plate also.

Find an old spreader, strip it, use the motors to drive it, and make a self propelled manure spreader for parades, etc. Quite a conversation piece.

years ago i heard (didnt see) about a fellow who used two old tractor tires for tracks, cut the beads out then simply stretched them over two tires with a idler wheel between,or so the story goes.supposedly worked well for pushing snow and stuff, but was hard to keep on in really dry stuff.wouldnt really be too hard to build a skid steer type affair and do something like that.

You will probably need a gear reduction gearbox on each motor also, because most all hydralic motor torque is rated for direct drive. By adding a sprocket or gear on the motor shaft you're giving that gear a big (leverage) advantage that will work against the motor not with the motor. Definition of a gear/sprocket is a continious/circular lever applied to a shaft. So the larger the sprocket or gear to drive the tracts will make your project go faster down the road but will reduce the power it will have considerably. Just my 2 cents worth.

Salvageing parts from an old zero turn lawn
mower, would be a good place to start!
We've got an old "Jacobson" golf course mower
with reels driven by hydraulic motors, and lots
of cylinders and valve banks...that will be good
for some sort of project.

Guess you made it back home since I see you posting here. Thanks for the beer and the sausage etc. Did some horse trading to get a pair of hyd motors and a couple cylinders all new by the way

These motors are set up for a chain drive set up. They came fro ma place that makes whiskey barrels and they use this type of motor to drive big turn tables and also long belts to feed the block of oak into the band saw mills they have. I worked for the place one summer till I got layed off and from what I remember these motors where high torque since some of the turn tables where a good 10 feet in diameter and when covered with blocks of oak where turning a lot of weight

I have probably 10 pumps laying around and many valve bodies also. Years ago I worked for the place these motor came from so I do have some idea of how they work and what they will power. Came from a factory that makes whiskey barrels and these motors where used to power turn tables and belts to feed the band saws
