Did any of you guys watch the guy jump from the balloon at 128000+ feet? Made a perfect landing too.

es! Very interesting.. Like another said, how did they get his b___s to fit into that space suit?!

I saw a show on the History channel a couple years ago about a guy that did the same thing back in the 50s testing space suit and high altitude bailout survivability for space program then in its infancy and spy planes. It was very interesting, and they said the guy probably exceeded the speed of sound way up high in the very thin atmosphere, slowing as he got lower into the more dense air. Now that guy had what it takes. So I guess I am not so amazed at the guy doing it now, it was already done 60 years ago so whats the big deal.

That would be Joe Kittinger. He was talking to Baumgartner during today's ascent. Apparently Baumgartner wasn't afraid to jump but he hated wearing the pressure suit, gave him panic attacks.

(quoted from post at 13:16:25 10/14/12) Why must you be rude? You sure do not have what it takes to do what he did.
Congradulations Felix!

1. I don't see anything coming from this. Bail outs from space craft? Come on. Space craft at that altitude are traveling so fast that bail outs are not likely to be successful. Plus at the speeds they are traveling when things go wrong it happens so quick that time to bail out becomes doubtful.

2. He's a stunt man for Red Bull to get them publicity. He isn't doing this for research, he's doing it for MONEY! Come on, a guy sets out to be the fastest hot dog eater and he's a joke.......one guy uses his mouth to set records, this guy is using gravity......big deal. I fail to see this as news worthy.

3. I'm not sure if that is courage or stupidity. The guy flying the balloon most likely collected more data in the ascent and decent than the jumper.

4. I'm glad he was successful but not really impressed. He jumped with a device to auto open a chute should he pass out. Heck you could have suited up a monkey and tossed him out and gotten the same results.

Mach 3 is less then 1/10th the speed of a spacecraft. We saw what happens when the heat shields fail in the Columbia loss.

Which is EXACTLY why this type of endevour is needed - to oneday MAYBE develop an escape plan.

Space walks are moving along at a pretty good clip, too.....

I'm no big fan of all this space stuff, I just think America could find better uses for the money at present! Just my humble opinion!

Thing of it is when launching the danger is explosions like we have seen before. Chance of individuals "bailing out" is slim to none. When coming back in it's burning up in re-entry. Again the ability to get out means that you have to have time to make that decision and jump at an altitude where you don't burn up. In both cases there was nothing to be done. An escape pod type system may be workable in the future but people just jumping? Heck we should work on systems to allow passengers to bail out of commercial aircraft.....actually most often crashes happen landing and taking off, way to low to bail out and no time to do it in unless an ejections seat system is used that could be pulled from the cockpit.

So that brings us back to a publicity stunt for the sponsers and a guy bent on getting his name in the records.

Sorry can't get worked up over it.

I got way more respect for our young men and women who are joining the military than with this guy.

Rick

That is the point! We're not talking an explosion,
here, we're talking about surviving a doomed
spacecraft. "blowing up" is blowing up - no matter
if you are 150 miles or 3 feet.
there are plenty of "publicity stunts" throughout
history that proved their worth later.
Some of the day called Lindburg's trans-atlantic
flight the same thing.

Think about that for a second. Making the decision to jump, while in re-entry, would result in the jumper most likely burning up in the last part of the space/upper atmosphere. Then the jumper has to free fall a long way before they can even think about popping a chute because of O2 and cold. Basically it's not a survivable event. When the shuttle broke up those people had little time to figure out what was wrong. And that's in there training. Address the problem, not abandon ship. I rather doubt they finished trying to fix the problem before the darn thing just came apart. That means no time to make the decision to jump much less the time to do it.

As far as how fast they are going when they do a space walk that has nothing to do with trying to do that walk in air. LOL thats why they only do space walks. Try bailing out in space.......you will be in orbit for some time!

What Mr. Kittinger did "60 years ago" was not exactly the same thing.
Although Kittinger did hold all the records until now, he was also helping with this
project to break his own "records" at age 84.
There's a lot of info out there on the subject if you're interested in why it's important.
This "publicity stunt" has been 5 years in the making, with more than 70 scientists involved.
Call me nuts, but I would have love to see that view!
