Here's a hint. Backup your files more often than I do.
I went to record some transactions in my accounting program and it was ALL gone. My zip drive was only current to June 10th,so I had to sit here with reciepts and the checkbook ledger doing it all over. The backup's current now!

Don't know what the h3ll happened. Just know that when I got up the other night to "use the facilities",the wife was still up and was downloading stuff in to my computer instead of hers and had it locked up and shut down.

Not what I had in mind doing on a rainy day!

Good advise.

My method, keep everythnig in a shoebox until February, then go on a 3 day no-sleep marathon of entering data and sort it out.

Not such a good plan.... :)

Backup often. And the nice thing is, external storage is getting really cheap these days. You can get 32 GB flash drives or 1 TB external hard drives for $30 and $90, respectively, depending on how much data you are backing up and how portable you want it to be.

Ya,mine's right in the fire safe. It's just not much good if you do like I do and just leave it there.

glad im not the only one that does that.

just a tip, if you put the papers in face down, when you go to start tax season, take your hand, put it on the pile then flip the box upside down on the table and slid your hand out, everything should be in order from the first of the year

Everybody talks about backing things up. In 15 years since I have had a computor NO ONE HAS YET BEEN ABLE TO TELL ME HOW TO DO IT. How the heck do you do it????? Bought 2 new ones from one computor store and not one word about backing up. bought 3rd one from different computor store, never a word on backing up. Got 4th one now and hope I can get this guy to tell me how to do it. And am pretty computor illiaterate. Can just use for basics. Just lost all emails I had kept for the important information in the 3rd one.

Definitely does not sound like fun! That's a new computer too isn't it?
I like Will's idea of an external drive.
I use Windows Sync Toy on Windows 7.
Once you set it up, it keeps the two (or more) locations synchronized without you
having to do anything except check it once in a while to make sure it's still working.
If it makes you feel any better, all I've done all day is change the oil in my truck
and some of the tractors. About $150 worth of oil and filters.
Good use of a rainy day I guess. Didn't make it up to that auction.

Ya,with it raining I didn't even think about that auction until I saw somebody pull an elevator past here that I figured came from there.

Idon'tworry aobut backups any more. Got Carbonite. Last year my hard drive took a dump (still underwarranty) and I lost everything. When I got a new drive installed, just contacted them, and in a few hours everything was back. Thopusands f pictures and all only lost one file, and it was nothing important. Definatly worth the cost.

Go on line or to Sam's Club and purchase a 1 Terabyte external hard drive. Less than 100 bucks.
Plug it into a usb port and follow the directions on the screen. 20 minutes later it will be making a full file backup of data. It might take 2 hours or more, but the computer is usable while backing up. Jim
