JD Door Disaster

Decided to buy the John Deere 6140D. Just got it Tuesday and my nephew has been dying to drive it. I've had it on a gravity wagon with fertilizer, so I told him to take it from one field to another one down a highway. I think he was so excited about driving it that he forgot to slam the door. Gets on the highway at almost 20mph and the LH door flies open and shatters the glass, which is the whole door. My guess is he about cr@pped his pants. As sick as it made me, I guess no one was hurt and the door can be replaced. It would be nice if this was the last trouble, but probably not. How was your day? Bob

Kid I have working for me this summer (18) was rototilling in my MF 1085 cab tractor. It was pretty hot so he had the doors and windows open - tied back. He was trying to do a good job I know...not paying attention to the front left and drove too close to a tree. Door bent backwards glass went bang. Guess I have another winter project.

I've had to replace the door on my 6400 twicw, now. The first time, I didn't get lined up to the baler, and pulled up about two feet to line up again, and caught the door. BOOM- sounds like a cannon going off. And a neighbor driving it, didn't get into a blower close enough. He backed the wagon away to get in closer, didn't shut the door when he climbed back in. I cought the blower tractor's rear wheel when he pulled back up. About 5 or 6 hundred each time....

Thankfully no one was hurt or injured in this mishap.

Left hand door glass is available aftermarket:
Neighborhood of $ 355.00.

Not trying to be a smartask, but do you get in and out of your truck when trying to get your trailer ball under the hitch and close the door every time and buckle up your seat belt? Didn't think so.....

Same thing happened to me this summer with a new RoGator. I met a truck going north (I was southbound into a 25 mph wind) and it opened so fast it could make your head spin. Sounded like my .270 going off. Nothing $450 and a couple hours couldn't fix. And, to the fool that chirped about door stops on tractos, RoGators have little door stops. That's what made it break. Door stops aren't gonna help at 20 mph (or 15 or even 10)...

I agree the door stop is what made it break. Of course it tore the hinges to where I need complete new hinges. It's just like you spend so much money on something that you at least would like to get a week or two before the first scratch..lol! Anyway, probably never get the poor kid in it again. He is just sick about it and wanting to pay for it, but I figure it is a good lesson learned. Might be lucky to still be alive..Actually, when he was 9 he had lymphoma and luekemia and was not expected to live. Many months, actually years of pain and suffering, so I can't be too hard on the boy!

Been there done that on a 7800. They go off with a bang when they get right open at road speed left half the door on the road and rest in the cab. Was a big oh #@%# moment. $1200 later had a new door

Young people today have no knowledge of "suicide doors". Many cars used to have them and exactly the same thing would happen.

I was pulling out a stuck tanker with Dad's brand new 1979 JD 310A backhoe using the rear bucket with the tractor dug in. The chain snapped and came thru the rear window of the cab like a shot and just missed me. After the initial 15 minute "you stupid a**" chewing out, I called the dealer and ordered a new window $270 (in 1979 dollars).

A backhoe pulled onto the highway and the door flew open, just as the wife met him in her car. Her car took the full impact of the broken glass and put a lot of chips in the paint.

Well, when I retired, I changed my farm policy to a homeowners and saved a ton of money. The policy is a 1% deduct and it was way more than what the door cost me. That means that I foot the bill for small stuff, but I keep things close so as to minimize small stuff losses. Been with state farm for over 25 years and get some nice bundling discounts. They don't do a lot of advertising with goofy things and pass the savings on.

I suppose you don't watch any TV and see some of State Farm Insurance Co's DUMB commercials that rival Geico's or Progressive's DUMB commercials. Before you get too defensive I've had State Farm for my vehicle insurance every since I turned 16 and I'm now 68.
