IH 784 lost lights after battery drain?

The other day after I was done dropping a round bale to the cows, after I pulled the kill switch I FORGOT to turnoff the ignition. Surprisingly, this was the very first time I have done this. The battery was completely drained this morning, so I had to jump start the tractor with my truck. When I went to turn on the lights, there was NOTHING! What would of caused this by the battery running completely down? How & where would I start to diagnose? Thanks for your help.

Check the fuse first. Don't know where to tell you to look, but it's there somewhere.

Thanks for the response JA! I will check the fluid. (Always got to be one JackA** on here!)

On a side note....why would the fuse be blown if the battery was drained? I have accidentally drained car & camper batteries, but I have never had to replace fuses as a result of it???

Must be one of the 47%'ers.....nothing better to do than sit at home & play on the computer all day & make dumb comments!

Don-WI - none of my last two posts were directed towards you in any way, they were intended for the reply I got from JohnnyFromMI.

my guess is--you jump started a dead-dead battery. alt. is pushing big time to charge it. you pulled on lights while all this is going on & surge blowed a fuse?

Could be that the lower voltage in the battery caused the amperage to rise past the fuse capacity and blew it, but I wouldn't see why that should happen- the power drain should have been the same. But I have had fuses heat up enough to just melt the solder connections inside, then go open as they cooled. Looks like the fuse is good, but it's actually bad. It may need a slightly larger fuse, especially if some or all of the lights have been replaced with ones that use a bit more power.

As for the lite fluid, I never change mine- I just replace the filter and add enough to top it off.....

Yeah, you have to be careful when jumping stuff, as you can get surges that will blow stuff out. There is some serious amp flow.

Hi, if the fuse is good then check for a bad ground on the headlights. There is only one ground wire on the front and one on the rear. The front one can be accessed by removing the front radiator grill. Follow the single wire to a lug under a bolt into the frame. The rear ground is connected to a bolt on the deck plate behind the seat.

Could be the fuse, easy enough to check that.
Its usually pretty easy to pull a light and see if you have 12 volts across the terminals.
If you do, the headlights blew when jump starting. Not likely unless they were on at the time.
What voltage do you have across the battery terminals when running?
Could be the battery was ruined by running it dead and the alternator can't put out enough power to run the lights.
If that is the case, the alternator will not last long.
I only change blinker fluid.
I find it easiest to park the tractor cross-wise a hill and drain both sides to the left. :)
