O.K.. Know it is not the way you guys out west do it but we farm quita a bit of federal wildlife land and have to do a lot of things their way.. Her is wehat seeded after corn three weeks ago. Ground disked two times , 60 lb wheat,300 lbs tripple 15, and 1200 lb lime pre acre all blended and truck spread. Rolled in with a brillion double roller and here is the results. Had about 600 acres done last this last year and with the bad dry weather still made 56 bu per acre..Hard to get a good photo, high hill overlooking the Cumberland river. Field size in this part of the country is very small compared to mid west.

56 bushel an acre? Not bad..do you get it all or do you leave some for the ciritters?

Ground disked? Is the idea to avoid disturbing the ground?

To get in earlier behind the combine, we often broadcast 3 bushels, then cut the stalks with a gyromower. Still makes good wheat.

Disked to provide a seed bed and cut the stalk residue.. Actually most of the time we get the wheat but leav a greater share of the corn or beans. They (the refuge) want the wheat planted early for the geese and deer.

some of the best wheat i ever grew was sown.the packer makes a difference.what did you use to sow this?seems most guys here think those whirlwind type spreaders wont work for anything, but it looks pretty good to me. biggest trouble with sowing is its hard to get an even stand, and you normally sow at a higher rate per acre. but it will work. folks did it for hundreds of years.

wondering if a 3pt cone shaped spreader will work.. what settings did you use? Now I am curious if it will work for red hard winter wheat...And by how much did you have to increase the seed quantity per acre???
Thanks, Ralph in OK.

those spreaders will work, ive put in a lot of wheat with one.I personally would increase the seeding rate by about half.loose seedbed, sow then pack or drag.if your fertilizing do it before your last discing.

Thanks, Jack. I was thinking about fertilizing before last disking, too, but wasn't sure 100% (see my post in this forum, "...field prep...horse manure".
Ralph.
