O.T. Apple Cider

I wanted to ask if anyone out there makes their own apple cider and how do you do it? Do you use a press or some other way? I've been wanting to buy a cider press but never have. Any suggestions on a good one? Thanks for any information!

I have the family cider press that no one really knows how old it is, but no one can remember it not being in the family. It consist of a grinding mechanism and a press. You grind the apples and then press them for the cider. All it is, is apple juice. The old cider presses like I have can get pretty pricey at auctions and antique shops.

I have made 3 cider presses. One just this past summer. It won't be used this year, no apples in this area because the late frost got the blossoms.
There are lots of plans on the internet mine look like the one from Mother Earth News. Check this link from YT.

Cider Press.

Back in 1954 when in aggie college me and two other guys filled our cars with bushels of apples we bought as seconds @.50 each. We brought 'em to my farm where I had borrowed a press like you built. We made 15 gallons. I could have bought the press for $6.00 but I didn't because I didn't have any trees.

In those plans he mentions NOTHING about the most important part of a cider press and that is the GRINDER. Everything he is talking about is just a fruit press like for grapes or cherrys. Without a grinder you cannot make cider. So my question is where could you buy reasonable priced grinders or any good way of making the grinder. If I could find a grinder that I could make I would have a market for the cider presses. I have one person now that has asked me to find him one. Last spring I found a junk press that was overpriced but anouther person that was wanting me to find him one said get it. It was the poor style of grinder and all the wood needed replacing. If I could build some at a reasonable price I deal with 2 Amish Machinery dealers, possibly a third that I could set presses at for sale. This is in a large Amish comunity and I am curently supplying them with machinery.

Google APPLE GRINDER PLANS lots of home built ideas I run mine with a half inch drill. Its just a 5" drum with screws sticking out about 3/8"
