custom harvesting

when i get out of high school me and one of my buddies are thinking of going out west to work for a custom harvester for a while. i have heard lots of good things from my dads boss and a guy who drives a truck for our local JD dealer. anybody know of any good crews out there? i have 2 years to decided but still. i have run some of the newer combines for a little bit and drove a grain cart quite abit.

I have been out of the wheat harvest for five years. You might have to do a lot of driving. Leave you information with lots of equipment dealers, and Grain elevators. Yes there are some good and fun times, but also so bad. Several days of rain and no work, and drought and no jobs. Living in a trailer house most of the time with several others. And of course Farmers shooting at you because you looked at his daughter. Ha Ha

mike plotner,

I say go for it. You are only young once - and this is the time in life when you are not tied down with a spouse, home ownership, etc. Even doing it for one season will be an interesting memory.

My nephew did it one season and was in several states out west and gained some work experience. After that he came back to his home-state... and now works for a big farmer that owns land in numerous states from TX to MN. He may advance in that job - or perhaps he will tire of it and decide on college or military.

Now is your time to live out a dream or two. Enjoy it, but remember to be responsible about saving money for your future!!

A lot has changed, but I went 50 years ago and run a combine (no cabs) and never got to town to see the girls.

That is something I always wanted to do but never did. Look in the classifieds in local farm papers, Grass and Grain and High Plains journal are a couple around here, usually ads in there in the spring for harvest help for the wheat run.
