Ford 8000 or Massey 1100, If you had a choice

Hi all,

I was wondering what your choice would be if you could pick between buying a 1970 Ford 8000 or 1966 Massey 1100.

I am interested in getting a little more horse.

Thanks,

Tyler

You have two different types of tractors here. The Ford is a highboy for cultivating gardens. The Massey is a Wheatland type used for plowing and discing.
Decide what you are going to use it for then pick the one that matches best for your needs.

The Massey in the picture is not a wheatland as it has 3 point arms and possibly an adjustable front axle. I vote for the Massey.

I'd go for the massey,that ford looks pretty tough,wrong paint,no emblems,wrong muffler,looks like it's had a rough life.

We have an 1100 Massey that my dad bought new, and it's been a good tractor. We've pulled a 5 bottom 720 IH plow with it, but it's a little much for the tractor. For the horsepower (94 hp,) they're relatively inexpensive compared to a similar size IH, etc. Seems like they go for around $5k to $6k. Seen an 1130 go at auction last year for $4000, still kicking myself for not buying it. Does the one in the picture have a turbo on it? Just wondering because the air cleaner looks different. One thing to remember with the 1100, when the motor isn't running, you have no brakes.

This is the description on it:

$4000, MF 1100 2WD, 7.50-18SL FRONT TIRES 70%,
18.4/15-34 REAR R1 TIRES 50%, CAT II 3PT HITCH, 2
REMOTES, 540 PTO, 6-2 COLLAR SHIFT W/MULTI POWER,
TACH DOES NOT WORK

Thanks for the information.

I'm more savvy with the Fords. Any advice on what to inspect and red flags when look at the tractor?

I got burned on a 4000 that had a cylinder problem, that I should have compression tested first. What is good compression for this tractor?

Again thanks for advice!

an 8000 is a really nice tractor, but out of the two you pictured I would take the massey, that ford is ragged.

Both were good tractors but both can have hydraulic issues and not cheap to fix, check them out throughly. All things being equal I'd pick the Ford but the gear shifting takes some getting used to.

Being an Oliver guy,I don't have a horse in this race, but I think that Massey has a 354 Perkins. Worlds toughest engine in my humble opinion. On the off chance that you ever do need to replace it,there are probably thousands of them in combines with low hours in the boneyards.

if both were equal condition, I might at least think about the ford. From those pictures I think the Massey seems like a better choice. That Ford looks a little rough. We have a 1080 that we have been pretty happy about to this point.

That Ford is a "cover-up" and that Massey looks pretty untouched and nice. Get that $4000 in his pocket before someone else does!!!

I don't own any blue or red tractors only green.
But I have run both & didn't have a problem.
If that Ford was a nice 9600 we'll say, then
I'd might try the Ford.. But it's Not, those
1100 Massey are kind like a good 4020 Deere
they Run & Run & run.. The massy is a much
better tractor of the 2 pictured.

They'll both run pit pumps and silo blowers equally well... If you're going to the field I think I'd want something with a bit more creature comfort than either of that pair will offer.
I'd go with at least an 8700 on the Ford side...

i would deff take the ford any day. i got 1 and i love it. my 8000 is a powerhouse and is in great orginal shape paint is great yet on mine. i see nothing wrong with that other than who ever painted it doesnt know what there doing. the sheet metal and fenders look real good i wouldgo for the ford i like mine and i will never buy a mf im a ford guy and thats about it.

If you were "happy" with a 1080 you would be absolutely thrilled with an 1100! The 1100 of course is a bit bigger than a 1080 but the consensus over here is of the two, the 1100 was a much better tractor anyway.
