13 1/2 years ago I took a lab sheperd mix out of a box at a flea market. Yesterday I lost her.
It really hurts to have lost her. Don"t know how to get over this one.

You have my sympathy, but time helps heal. I love the post by JoeM(GA)! There is so much truth in that! When my wife died two years ago and the daughter went back to work, it was just me and Bubba, our Doberman and who knows what else breed, here at the house. I don't know what I would have done at times if it weren't for his companionship.

JED,sorry for your loss. I was out at my Black Lab Drake's grave this evening,Thinkin about him and talkin to him about all the good times we had hunting together. He was one great duck dog.I had to lay him to rest this past spring,he was 14.It really hurt and I still miss him.I know I'll be missing him when duck season rolls around this year.Don't even feel like duck huntin this year without Drake.I have seen him break 1/4" of ice to retrieve Ducks and Geese. One great dog!

Yep, its pretty hard to lose one. Lost our golden, Macy, about a month ago. I've had to put several down over the years, held each one, whispering in its ear the whole time the vet did what has to be pretty hard on vets too, until they slip into the next world, listening reassuringly to their partners comforting voice as they take that journey. Its never easy, but I wouldn't do it any other way. They were always there for me, and I've tried to be there for them, all the way. We still have a slightly younger lab, Max, and the family wants to get him a parner, but I'm not ready yet and don't know that I ever will again. Losing each one hurt, but Macy the most. She loved everyone but attached herself to me, and I let her. I guess I didn't mind.

Sorry for your loss. Very sorry.

Mark

Just a dog ? And a member of your family! Very sorry to hear of your loss. My old yellow Lab "Abby" turned 10 this summer and is showing her age. I dread the day you have just experienced. I am hooked on yellow Labs though, and when the day comes that I part with Abby I'll look for a yellow pup.

In the 49 years I was around and my dad was alive, I saw him cry ONE time. That was when his favorite dog died. Some people just don't have a clue how much a good dog adds to one's life. Some of us do. Sorry for your loss.

I understand. In my younger days I had a collie. Went through a time when I thought that dog was the only thing on earth that cared whether I lived or died. Putting him down was real tough.

So sorry to for the loss of your friend...I believe with all my heart the good Lord gives us great dogs to remind us what unconditional love is all about...

I lost my best friend three years ago last week, a stubborn 13yr old basset. Spleen cancer...one of the hardest days of my life. Fortunate to have a 6 yr old chocolate lab that sent the first three years of his life growing up with him and has filled his paw prints very well...

When you can I'd encourage you to give that big heart of yours a chance with another that needs you just as much...

I had a St Bernard that I had to put down. She snapped at a neighbor kid that was just looking at her in her doghouse. My wife insisted. That hurt more than any dog I've had to put down because of old age. She was only 6.

I always hate it when that happens right now I one new Border Collie and one lab colie cross that it is around 15.
My advise is to take a week or two go on vacation then find a new pup to train that will keep you busy for a long time.

We've lost two in the last three years. Great friends, and both are missed. But we've also adopted two more- an Aussie and another border collie. It was just too quiet around here without them. Both are pound hounds, and now own the place.

Very sorry for your loss, that's real tough. I had a lab/shepherd mix, he was a great dog. The toughest, gentlest dog you could imagine, with a heart so big I thought it might bust out of his chest sometimes.

But I feel sorrier for those who never had a dog who was a friend like yours.

There are lots of good dogs out there needing a home. Don't do it for you, do it for them. But it'll turn out good for you too...

Been through it twice. Both times I couldn't hardly see through the tears when I hauled it out to the field to bury it. But I got over it. The last time it happened I swore off getting another dog just to shelter me from going through the emotions of having to bury it, but this chocolate lab landed in my lap five years ago so someday I'll have to do it all over again. Our dog was 17 years old when we had him put down. We decided then not to get another dog as kids were gone and we were planning to retire in a couple of years. Been retired for 15 years and still miss him.

Why loosing a companion dog can be worse than loosing a human freind is that they are non-judgmental. They don't care if you are rich or poor, man or woman, black, white or green, fat or thin, handsome or ugly, young or old, smart or stupid they are happy to see you. You give them a little food and shelter and they give you everything. Then when you least expect it they will sneak up and steal your heart.

Four years ago we lost out 13 YO Golden Retriever. I also lost my BC-Aussie mix (rescued him in 2001 and he really wanted a family, but thats another story)when I divorced my wife and he was 10 then and she refuses to tell me about him or if he survived the move from his mountains in NC to a condo in southern FL. He was a daddy's dog.

5 years ago, some folks with a 10 year old australian sheperd bought a puppy from us (another aussie) because the old dog was slowing down and they hopedher character would rub off on the new puppy before she died.... Puppy perked the old dog up and she's still in pretty decent shape for her age just a little grey in the face and getting pudgy...........

Find you a nice puppy and see how fast you feel better. Don't think of it as a replacement. Just a thought, but if it's not expected to do heavy work, a smaller lap size (schnauzer or some other terrier type) will fit the recliner, seat hump, and tractor fender nicely and make a willing and able squirrel hunting companion.....
