GVWR Trailer Question

I am thinking of buying an H&H Trailer Model UT162, it is a utility flatbed trailer that is 8.5" x 17". Online I have found that this model has a GVWR of 7k but the seller said that on the title the GVWR is only 2,900. Is this because of downrating? It doesn"t make sense.

Whoops, here's the photo

I believe the weight that is on my titles, is the actual weight of the trailer. Not sure if the GVWR is my titles.

That trailer most likely has 2 3500 lb axles for a total of 7000 lbs plus 500lbs +/- for the coupler, so 7500 lbs gvw. Then you have to subtract the weight of the trailer for max capacity that you can haul.

Those trailers are normally rated at 7,000 lbs total, but I wouldn't max it out. Those type trailers are made of light weight angle and aren't very sturdy. Spend a little more and get a car hauler type. They are much beefier than these lawn mower/utility trailers.

Here in Wisconsin a lot of folks declare the gvw on trailers under 2,600 LBS so you don't have to do tags and titles, your state might be different or the manufacturer may of over built and under rated to manage their liability (it broke? Gee how much weight was on it? Oh that's why YOU OVERLOADED IT, it's your fault, leave us alone)

One problem with that type of trailer that you may not thought of is if you ever go and get a pallet of something you can't load it on there with a fork lift.

Does the trailer have brakes on it? In most states anything with a GVWR of 3,000 lbs. or less are not required to have brakes. You can check your state by going to Digest of Motor Laws and look up your state.

That's a pretty small trailer only 8 1/2 x 17 inches. The tongue looks kind of light on the picture you posted. What kind of price is being asked? The reason I ask is because you might be able to find a better built trailer around the same price.

I have a 16 ft tandem axel pequa. The trailer weights 2000 pounds empty, but the gross vehicle weight is 7000 pounds, that means I can carry 5000 pounds on it minus 2000 for trailer weight. You cam register it for any weight u want, but if u were pulled over and weighed and were over weight u could get a ticket. Hope that helps.

all that is on mine is the actuall weight of the trailer and that is the weight the price of the plates goes by. Nothing to do with gross load weight.
