old water well?

I have an old 1 1/4 inch well that looks like its set on a hand dug well. what was the recommended way to convert to a pipe swell? did they put a well point and pipe in the well, fill with a few feet of pea gravel then fill with clay to seal it? The pipe is 6 below ground level in the old 4x4 stone well. Its the best well I have.

It is tough to tell from here. The driven well may have been placed much deeper than the original dug well. If you need to know you could disconnect the coupling and put a weighted string with a float down the pipe and see how far it goes down to water. then remove the float and see how far the point was driven (at least to the foot valve.) The use of pea gravel and backfill is certainly possible. Jim
