convert to alternator

HI, Anyone know if there is a file somewhere, on the wiring changes when converting to an alternator. 6 volt tractor will be 12v with alternator. can the cut out/alternator be eliminated. Thanks.

Check out this web page. I wired my Gleaner E this way and it works great. The charge light is helpful if the alt fails because it will light when running, as well as if the engine quits.

I've converted several old Farmalls to alternators. The best way is to use a onewire Delcotron alternator. You may have to build a speacial bracket.Strip out the entire wireing system and rewire the tractor. One wire. From alt, thru the amp gauge, then to battery. That's it.For ignition, from gauge to switch, then to coil, then to points.Done.You can then add lights, etc.Buy a couple rolls of electrical tape, and make a nice, neat, clean 'harness'.

Yes, the cutout is no longer needed and can be eliminated.
The link below takes you to a good, simple, easy to understand wiring diagram and parts list.

I perfer using a charge light rather than a diode.
The charge light serves as an indicator that 1 your alternator field circuit is working,2 your alternator is / is not charging,3 you forgot to turn off the ignition and will run down your battery.

Also, the indicator light serves as a current limiter and restricts the alternator excite load on the ignition circuit to aprox 1/4 amp, while using a diode will not limit current and will allow the alternator field to draw 3-4 amps, nearly doubling the amp load on the ignition circuit, which can cause a voltage drop and weak spark / hard starting.
Alternator conversion.
