hi again sorry for putting this in the tractor section but i really appreciate the info on the chimney one other question what kind of paint do i use to paint a block chimney to seal it and where can it be purchased thanks guys and gals

Pointing is taking a very thin chisel and chipping out loose and broken mortar , then repalcing and troweling in new. It goes better than you think once you get at it.
My shop has a cement block chimney with a flu liner,I've never sealed it..but if I was going to I would use something like water sealer,or boiled lindseed oil cut 50% with paint thinner. If you want color then I would use latex exterior primer and apply two coats then finish coat of latex exterior.

Mix up some portland cement & water to a thick brushable paste & brush it on. Best on a cool damp cloudy day, not in bright sun. You want it to dry (cure) slowly.

I mix up the mortar and use a mortar hawk (think of a large trowel w/ the handle sticking out of the bottom -- google gave me a couple of images just now if you can't picture it). I hold the hawk even with the bottom of the mortar joint and use a brick spoon to push the mortar into the horizontal seams. With a little practice you can rotate the spoon for the vertical seams and catch everything that falls on the hawk for reuse.
