A couple of weeks ago I was unhooking a baler and stepped on a mound I didn't see in the tall grass. They stung, then itched, then festered, and finally went down leaving scars. Yesterday the round baler became unthreaded and I had to get on the ground to rethread it. Looked carefully on the ground, I thought, but there was one very small small mound just starting that got ants on me, again. Did I tell you I hate fireants?KEH |

| | If you can stand the expense, and aren't worried about being 'environmentally friendly', brake cleaner is an excellent poision for fire ants. I've sprayed many mounds in my yard, and in the field when I was working on something and there was one in the way, and have yet to see an ant that didn't die on contact with the stuff. Heck, I usually spray a ring around the mound before doing something to stir them up and get as many of them topside as possible before hitting it with the first blast and watching the bodies pile up. I know they usually move the nest a little ways if you don't kill them all, but I have yet to see anymore in the general vicinity of one I've 'cleaned' out. |

| BTDT. I"ve learned to only work on stuff on the concrete if at all possible, I have my share of scars too. Got a gash in my head once while working under a truck, seems I layed in a pile and they began working on the crotch area. Raised up so quick I whacked the bottom side of the truck. Ran for a garden hose, dropped my drawers and drenched myself. OUCH! Last few years there hasn"t been many here in S. TX. since it"s been so darn dry. A few weeks ago we got a 2 inch rain and they came up everywhere. Started dumping Orthene on the mounds and ended up with twice as many mounds, can"t ever seem to get them all and they will move when their home is disturbed. They do not like vibration, I never have any in the goat pens or the dog pens since the animals are always moving. I"m pretty glad of that too since when it"s kidding time you can loose a kid pretty quick if it"s dropped on a fire ant mound. Puppies are the same way. |
