Butternuts part 2

It appears that there are quite a few people interested in getting some butternuts.

If you could send me an e-mail I would be happy to send some. put nuts or similar in the subject so that the spam thing won't zap it.

Please find the original thread below.

They look like Chestnuts to me. I have a Chestnut tree. My wife's parents had Chestnut trees. I never liked them. Do they have a tough green thorny shell? We had to use heavy work gloves for those shells. Hal

Nope, nothing loke that.

They look like a black walnut and similar size, only more football, or almond, shaped.

They have a thin smooth green husk, similar to a black walnut. Probably a tad harder to get off.

The hard inner shell is _very_ hard and takes a good hammer to crack. VERY hard shell. The outside of the shell is very lacy looking, used for decorations and crafts by some.

They make a nice contrast to a black walnut taste, similar but different.

Last 2 years haven't gotten any butternuts, think we are down to one tree, used to have 3-4. We got 8-9 black walnuts, the squirrels cabn't even keep up, most are on the lawn, wife kinda hates them for obvious reasons with so many. :)

The green husks can be removed with a hand-crank ear corn sheller, feed the black walnuts or butternuts through it, and most of that soft green husk comes off, leaving the hard shell to dry a bit.

We like them enough to have planted 3 dozen butter nuts, Bart nuts and Heart Nuts saplings in 2007. Some trees are now starting to bear.

Hate to be a spoil sport, but the butternut disease lives in the seeds. It's probably not a good idea to send them around since you might accidentally send them somewhere where the disease isn't established.
