Steering on 1973 4000 Ford, 3cyl diesel, model 1414C

I have a 1973 model 4000 Ford 3 cyl diesel, model#1414C tractor. I am having problems with the upper seal on the stear column. ordered a new seal from New Holland and it seemed to be just a little to big. recontacted New Holland Dealer. He indicated there shows to be only one size available. Any suggestions?

If it is a standard lip type seal you should be able to get one from a bearing supply or on line just from the measurments.
Do you have a picture of the seal you could post?

I will in a day or two. I won't be back to the tractor until then. I also intend to have the seal seat area mesured at the bearing house. Thanks for your reponse. will be reposting in a day or two. thanks again

If it's a regular lip seal you should be able to get one from a bearing supply house. If it is the right seal and your shaft is worn the bearing supply house might be able to get you one with a slightly smaller ID or a redi-sleeve to go on the shaft to provide a surface the seal will seal against.

Use a socket or something similar to set it .I had the same problem took it to the dealership and that's what they did.Neighbor tried one from a bearing supplier recently and it still leaked.

Make sure you change the filter inside the power steering pump "can"..If it's starting to plug up , it won't allow the oil to return to the reservoir and cause a leak at the top of the column..

Okay, The original part number for this seal was E1NN3N632AA. Acording to the parts guy at the local New Holland store computer now indicates that part number now cross refferences to the new number 83929295. I had the houseing micromitered this morning it measures at 1.291 Upon recontacting the parts man his seal mic's at 1.38 I don't think there is any way that is going in that hole. Prior to measuring it I tried seating it with a socket as suggested here-in. As determined as i was I am now left with a pretty much destroyed seal and wondering which way to turn at this point. As per you guys on this forum "there is only one size". Any suggestions? Thanks for your time and help.
