I need a good way on how to determine when melons are ready to pick. Also we never had walnuts, but now I do and the Doctor I should eat some. I know people used to run them through an old corn sheller. Do they need to dry down first. Thanks in advance. J.

Don"t know anything about shelling walnuts, but Dr. is right. Walnuts are very good for you, way better than peanuts, pecans, or even almonds.

We ran them thru a corn sheller in the fall, then put the nuts in a onion bag to dry out. hanging in the garage.

Walnuts if where Iodine comes from. As a matter of fact if you cut you self and have a walnut close by take the outer husk and wipe it on the cut letting the juice from it get in the cut. That is suppose to be an old Indian remedy

Lay them out on a screen of some sort till the other husks dry out and turn black then drop them on your drive way and run over them or what works better is if you get the plans I have for a husker. Yes a corn sheller works also if you have one that is

I got a good crop of black walnuts falling here in Ohio. As dry as it was I thought there would be alot less ?
If anyone wants some come and get them !!!!

Better said than I could. -

"Walnuts may be considered the king of nuts for health benefits, with a combination of more healthful and higher quality antioxidants, U.S. researchers say.

"Walnuts rank above peanuts, almonds, pecans, pistachios and other nuts," Joe Vinson of the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania said in a statement. "A handful of walnuts contains almost twice as much antioxidants as an equivalent amount of any other commonly consumed nut. But unfortunately, people don't eat a lot of them. This study suggests that consumers should eat more walnuts as part of a healthy diet."

Vinson noted that nuts in general have an unusual combination of nutritional benefits. They contain plenty of high-quality protein that can substitute for meat; vitamins and minerals; dietary fiber; and they are dairy- and gluten-free.

Vinson said it takes only about seven walnuts a day to get the potential health benefits.

Research has found consumption of small amounts of nuts or peanut butter is linked to decreased risk of heart disease, certain kinds of cancer, gallstones, type 2 diabetes and other health problems.

Antioxidants in walnuts were two to 15 times as potent as vitamin E -- renowned for its powerful antioxidant effects, which protect the body against damaging natural chemicals involved in causing disease, Vinson says.

Shell the green rind off early in the hand crank sheller, let the mostly clean hard nut get some air to dry down for a few weeks after.

The high concentration of iodine in the caliche and the extensive mining made Chile the largest producer of iodine in 2007.

Most other producers use natural occurring brine for the production of iodine. The Japanese Minami Kanto gas field east of Tokyo and the American Anadarko Basin gas field in northwest Oklahoma are the two largest sources for iodine from brine. The brine has a temperature of over 60°C owing to the depth of the source. The brine is first purified and acidified using sulfuric acid, then the iodide present is oxidized to iodine with chlorine. An iodine solution is produced, but is dilute and must be concentrated. Air is blown into the solution, causing the iodine to evaporate, then it is passed into an absorbing tower containing acid where sulfur dioxide is added to reduce the iodine. The hydrogen iodide (HI) is reacted with chlorine to precipitate the iodine. After filtering and purification the iodine is packed.[13][14]

There is a large Iodine plant at Vici,Oklahoma gitrib

Maybe but so did the horse and the Indians got real good on them real fast just as Custer he learned the hard way didn't HE??? Either way black walnut husks do in fact help heal a wound

Green walnuts are good for fishing also If you have a relatively small body of still water which is not too deep. Put a couple gallons of green walnuts in a tow sack and tie the top closed with a length of rope, use a shovel and give the nuts a good smashing to bust the hulls. Drag the sack through the water which will turn the water red. The fish will go to the edge of the pond looking for oxygen. Someone can walk around the edge with a dip net and gather the fish. The condition will not last long. Fry those fish and eat em. A country boy can survive.

Them black walnuts will keep you busy breaking the shells and picking the meat out. Shell bark hickory nuts will give you more of a workout.

Dad used to drive the green walnuts through a knot hole. I prefer to pick them up in the driveway after driven over a few times. Have run a dried bunch through a a cement mixer with limited success. I prefer to take the damp nuts, put a couple inches in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and attack them with a high pressure powre washer. Cleans them up fast! Dry on a sidewalk or on a screen for a while, and they"re ready to crack. I like to put them in a plastic milk carton over a hot air register - dries them pretty qiick.

The apparatus at the left of the shed, the thing that looks like a red barbecue grill, is what my pa-in-law built to remove the outer husk from his walnuts. It's made of expanded metal screen, and it turns with a small electric motor. Cleans 'em right up. He also has a lever-type cracker that will shatter the shell and leave full halves.
