picked some turnips from the patch in pa on saturday, the neighbors grandma says she doesnt like them till after the frost hits them, she says they are sweeter then,. She doesnt eat the tops either, the neighbor across the road from us,who is a new comer to the area,(has lived there for only 40 years) likes the tops, I planted the turnip seed on August 5,,,,,I was surprised how fast they grew this year |

| | Been planting 5 or so acres every year for a decade or so now. Cattle love them this time of year. I plant them in spring with the oats. --->Paul |

| One summer I planted turnips on the half acre garden close to the house, very few of them came up. When fall time came I was crossing my neighbors property, there were hundreds of turnips growing in the leaves. Pointed them out to my neighbor, we had boiled turnips for weeks! I guess the seeds I planted must have floated away, the field drains into a pipe, thru the leaves heading to a small wetland. Then the next year we had a huge feral goat show up when we harvested the turnips. Would show up and want the tops we were not going to use. If we were late with the scraps he would charge the house and run into the wall. One day I walked past him - a mistake - when he was waiting to be fed. He hooked my boot in his horn and upended me. Hit my head on the step and wrestled him for a few minutes.... finally got inside. A few weeks later a relative was talking about a farm 5 miles away had lost a large crazy goat. We sent him home. |

| Great looking results! The "greens" are excellent cooked and seasoned with a little pork "fatback". You just have to wash them two or three times to remove any sand or dirt that may have splashed on them in a rain. Turnips are great also. I just cook them like potatoes and season them with a little margarine. Oh, and don't forget the cornbread! |
