Was reading the pic ads...looks like that guy in NH that doesn't realize that no matter how much you pour into a tractor, or how nice you make it, has moved his tock to Texas: it's still only worth so much...$5500 JD As...ya get the pic...spose if someone offered like $2200 which is absolutely all the nicest best restored JD late A is or will ever be worth he'd take it? Love As just usin' them as an example.

To the right person sometimes their worth more. If you were thinking of restoring a tractor to show and parade and it would cost you $5000 to restore one and you could buy an already restored one for less would you go for it? Maybe

This antique tractor thing is a hobby, the question is what aspect is the most fun for you? Taking an old rusty played out unit and carefully disassembling it and over coming the challenges of time and wear to make it like new again? Or is it the most fun driving, showing and pulling them and enjoying the company of like minded people? Is it taking your father's or Grandfather's tractor and making it just like it was when he used it and making memories with your kids while you relive the ones you had with your elders? Is it accomplishing field work just like your ancestors did? Or is it producing your own food and making a piece of ground you own yield it's bounty to you?

Former neighbor was teasing some of the other neighbor's about all the work they were doing on their houses-something like "Once you get all that work done you'll be out of projects and have to buy another house and start over again!" Or to put it another way is it the journey or the destination?

I always hate to hear someone say "I got $$$ in it, so that's what I need".

Sorry my friend, market price is market price - I don't care about your sunk costs.

Wouldn't be great if it worked that way? yep got $23 a bushel in this corn so that's what I got to get. I especially like the people trying to sell near new cars for more than the original selling price, kinds of a "it's worth more BECAUSE I OWNED IT" My payoff on the $20,000 car is $22,500 so that's what I have to get!!! A problem you see a lot among teachers.

Well, I can't speak for anyone but myself but the hours I spend in my shop working on an old machine are some of of the most relaxing and enjoyable times I have.

Would I want top dollar for a machine I restored? probably not. In fact it would probably end up being my sons', or his son (or daughter).

It might sound hokey but I think craftmanship is in pretty short supply these days and if someone saw a machine that I restored and became interested in learning more it would be a good thing.

Getting off the soapbox now.

My view is that I have $8000 in a $2500 tractor. I will never get more cash out of it than that. The rest is so I can enjoy it.

No...because if a JD A or Farmall H was gonna cost me over 5000 to restore...it"s too far gone to bother with...I love both, I have less than no interest in exotic high crops and such...I like tractors that really were the every day work horses; JD As and Bs IH Hs and Ms Ford Ns...but the bottom line is that no matter how much you have in them or how nice you made them they are still just that: JD As and Bs...We have several tractors that we have made 100% mechanically correct and look good, the most we have in any is about $3600 in our JD 70 and the same in our IH SH, I know neither is really worth that much though, but either should be worth more than a JD A or an IH straight H. Those tractors top out on value, they are not Plymouth GTXs and such

Wish I could find it again, but I saw an ad the other day for a tractor that itemized all he had in the tractor to "restore" it.

Total bill came out to around $4800 IIRC. His price, IIRC was around $5500. FIRM. Not a penny less.

Not only did he have to get back what he had in the tractor, he also thought he could make a tidy profit for his time.
